The Great American GPS Stash Hunt !!

-- Now that SA is off we can start a worldwide Stash Game!! With
Non-SA accuracy it should be easy to find a stash from waypoint
information. Waypoints of secret stashes could be shared on the
Internet, people could navigate to the stashes and get some
stuff. The only rule for stashes is: Get some Stuff, Leave some
Stuff!! The more valuable the stuff the more stashes will be
started.

I'm thinking of half burying a five gallon plastic bucket with
lid at the stash point. Putting in some stuff. Adding a logbook
and pencil so visitors can record their find. The log should
contain: Date, Time, What you got, and What you put in. Scanning
the log book should give you a quick inventory of the stash.

I'll look for a place near a road where few people would
normally go... Put in some cash, an old digital camera, and some
antique silverware!! I will come up with a cool name for my
stash and post coordinates soon!!!

Make your own stash in a unique location, put in some stuff and
a log book. Post the location on the Internet. Soon we will have
thousands of stashes all over the world to go searching for.
Have Fun!!

Dave...

It could work if enough people were interested.

Personally I prefer to throw away my junk in a skip rather than stash it away.

I'm for it! I'll put some thought in it from where I am and do it!
Anybody else gonna do it? I'm sure there won't be many immediately,
if at all, -- but hey -- this is a fun thing to do with GPS.

I've tried searching for USGS survey disks, but many are either gone,
on buildings or other structures, etc. This will be just another fun
thing to do on spare time with GPS!

Perhaps a website to post the "stashes" so others can check it when
they go travelling and see if one is nearby.

Comments? Existing stash coordinates?

Great idea Dave!
...er.... perhaps if you left the 'American' bit out of the name, if you
want it to be worldwide?

The surface of the planet consists of `America' and `America's Back Yard'. I
happen to be an inhabitant of that great aircraft carrier, the USS Great
Britain.

SO do your own stash hunt wherever you are. Geez, this "America is not
the world" diatribe grows old fast. Quit whining and do your own
thing.

Yeah, but what happens when some greedy b'stard with a GPS raids your
stash?

You make sure there's a portable GPS transmitter in there, to track where
the bastard goes.

You co-ordinate with other people from this group to hunt him down with
their GPS' and spring the slimeball.

Hey!

2-3 times a week, I "stash" stuff at N37.55545 W121.99910.

Have fun!

This sounds a lot like the practice of logging into a peak register, or
a similar register, say, under a remote arch. These registers are paper
logbooks of various kinds, usually stored in a metal or plastic tube, an
ammo can, or sometimes a glass jar or a plastic bag.

I see two differences...

1. The waypoints are arbitrary rather than geographically obvious. For
peak bagging you don't need a GPS, usually you can just keep going
uphill until there's no more uphill. :-)

(You know you're having a good day when you get to that point and
wish you could keep going uphill. :-)

2. In your game you propose that the players exchange trinkets through
a container. It's rare for people to leave mementos in register
containers, though not unheard of.

GPS registers/stashes sound like a fun game for those who enjoy such
things. The higher accuracy without SA certainly makes it possible.

Yup, the one serving my complex. That L/L above is good to 15 ft or so, too!

-Kenny, who wonders if anyone saw me out there with a GPS in the
middle of the night standing near a dumpster
