Garmin Mapsource
Roger Mundy
a strange symbol I had not seen before. It was a circle, shaded inside,
with a tilde symbol in the center. Upon right clicking on the symbol it
let me review tide information at any time of the day, week, or year for
many years into the future for that area. I looked in the Garmin
Mapsource manual, and in the help screens I could find no explanation
for this symbol. I realize Garmin must have added this symbol with one
of their updates, but why they dont put it in the manual or at least give
one an explanation is beyond me. It is like when the E-Map first came
out, and there was no explanation on how to create a Waypoint some
distance from your current location. Garmin, we love your free updates,
but please give us an explanation on what they look like and can do for
us.

Hyannis Port, MA. These symbols can be found all up and down the coast
from Maine to Florida. Great info for fisherman, boaters, and even
those people who like to get out with their metal detectors!

Which manual are you looking at?? Are you looking at MapSource BlueChart
manual?? The manual clearly describes how to use the tide tables and shows the
icon... 'America's Tides and Marine Services v4.00' (which is part of Garmin's
BlueCharts) contains tide stations -not the BlueCharts...
However, I'm having a problem with the BlueCharts that I've reported to Garmin
but haven't heard back... The tide symbols do not show up in my G-V when I
upload the America's Tides and Marine Services to it...???
And there is also a Marine POI Database that comes installed in some Garmin
units, such as the Vista and GPSmap 76(S)... This is also puzzling; after
uploading the POIs to a GPSmap 76S, I can't see anything (new) that isn't in the
basemap... I also asked Garmin just WHAT is in the Marine POI Database...

My guess they have been there all along...

Well, in the 76 manual, the tide symbol is explained under "Celestial"...

Don't believe the G-V is compatible with Tide Data. It is
not listed as a feature.

I dont have the Bluechart only the Metroguide. On the Metroguide Maps
these symbols show up, but strangely they do not show up when I download
the Metroguide Maps for that area into my E-Map.

Thats nice, but not exactly something I can carry around in my GPS.
If I am 20 miles out at sea and dont have access to the internet, it
would be nice to know I could look at my GPS, or laptop computer and get
the tide data for any area I want to go to.

That's odd - they show up on my eMap (v 2.74). They are labeled as "Tide
Prediction Stations," but the eMap doesn't have the capability to
display the tide data like the Map76 and some other models. I'm mainly
interested in them as a kayaker and therefore the tide height graphs
aren't directly useful - I'm more concerned about tidal currents than
heights.

OK, I see what you mean in MetroGuide USA... The symbol is there on the PC map,
but it doesn't upload to my G-V... I guess it falls under the classification of
"information only"...

Now this is REALLY confusing... I confirm that the tide symbols DO appear in an
eMap -but not a G-V...???

intellectual property rights" over the tides at its coasts. So you have to
ask the Queen what she has decreed the tide times to be today......
Does that mean the Brits have their own moon they can control the tides at
their own coastlines with? 8-)

Well, they don't claim IP on the tides, but on the tide parameters that they
collected themselves ...
Not that I'd support this attitude ...

I've used this on my Palm, and it is quite nice.
Once you load the appropriate region, you choose the nearest point
listed (it helps to know where you are and the nearest harbors).
It defaults to the current day, but you can easily choose any date if
you wish to plan ahead.
It even includes info on how high the tides will be (barring storm
activity) and on currents which could be very helpful to all types of
boaters and saltwater fishermen.
Anyone with a Palm who lives near an ocean should have this one.
