I'm considering getting my father a GPS for Christmas. I read a post
that the Magellan GPS 3000 is "specially suited for marine use" and I'm
wondering if there are others that are better suited? The GPS would be
used mostly in rivers and near shore on the Gulf of Mexico. It would
also be nice if he could take the unit with him in his car.

I'm not sure how prices run and what features are really useful to a
boater. I'd like to hear from some boaters out there.

Also, has anyone developed any GPS software for the HP-48 line of
calculators? I do a bit of hiking and I think connecting your GPS to an
HP would be ideal.

I think that Garmin's recievers are equally well suited to marine used,
and more suited to computer interfacing. With the Garmins, you and
transfer waypoint lists and other data between the GPS and a computer
(see my ftp directory (URLs below) for info and software).

The Magellans don't have the waypoint and track log upload/download
facility.

Hold on there Peter. That statement is not correct. I have a Magellan
NAV-5000DX. 1000 user stored waypoints, 20 routes of upto 20 legs each.
Man overboard route. Goto route. Up/Download of waypoints. etc etc. So
please don't make a blanket statement. By the way is a Garmin
waterproof?. Don't get me wrong I think Garmin makes great gps receivers.
