Hi,

I'm going sailing in the south Pacific in a few months (Tahiti,
Penrhyn, Christmas, Fanning & Hawaii -- no coments about the islands
above "the line"...), and I am considering upgrading from my Garmin
48. I want a handheld unit (it's not my boat), and I am soliciting
advice about who has go the best set of features and bang for the
buck.

Mapping would be cool, but the part of the world I am going to is not
well covered. I would like to ave simple and comprehensive computer
interfacing for upload/download of waypoints etc.

So what do you all think?

Thanks!

Have you actually checked Garmin's WorldMap at:
http://www.garmin.com/cartography/mapSource/index.html

I found it more than adequate -at least in Mexico- especially in the nautical
sense: http://www.gpsinformation.org/jack/cruise/cruise-a.html

Yes, I have looked at the Garmin site. Unfortunately, as far as I can
tell, of my viyage, the only portions that Garmin covers in any detail
are the Hawaiian islands. I don't want to be laptop based, just
thought thta maybe someone offered a hand held with charts for the
south pacific.

Were I in your situation, I would get on the phone and call the US
Coast Guard, to ask what equipment they are using for handheld use.

Their gps receivers are truly waterproof. IOW, they can take the full
force of a hose stream and not allow moisture/water inside the units.

I don't know if they have/use a mapping version, but that shouldn't be
critical if you have a way to get good coordinates.
