Is it possible to upload/download waypoints, routes etc. using NMEA
sentences? Do most GPS models support NMEA sentences? If so where can I
get more information?

NMEA sentences are used for the transfer of current positions, headings and
speed etc. and not for pre or post-processing. As far as I know is Magellan
using a extension of the NMEA protocol to up and download waypoints and
routes, but this is not standard.

There are sentence formats for
reading waypoint locations and
waypoint IDs of active routes.
See: http://pandora.inf.uni-jena.de/ttbb/gps/types.txt
But these formats are not used by
the most GPS devices.

For instance with Garmin-devices it is better
to use the GARMIN protocol.

Some GPS units can listen to a WPL sentence as a method of uploading
waypoints.

Actually this will work on Magellan's and Garmin's, Although not
published or encouraged as a capability on Garmin units.

Actually, yes. NMEA emits the route and then lists the waypoints in
that route with Lat/Long. If you watch what is coming out, you can
get the waypoints for each active route. If you sequentially activate
all routes, you can collect all waypoints used in all routes. There
should not be too many waypoints not used in any route.

Upload not possible.
