I'm looking into purchasing a GPS reciever for use in a boat that I will
use
exclusively in North American inland lakes. I think I've narrowed my
choices to
two differnt models... Magellan NAV 6500 and Garmin GPSMAP 210. Does
anyone have
any experience with either of these two recievers? Thanks in advance.

MIAMI, FL, Feb. 12, 1998 -- Trimble
(NASDAQ:TRMB) introduced today at the Miami
International Boat Show –the NavMariner™ DGPS
Charting Navigator, the company's latest addition to a
long line of innovative marine navigation products.
The NavMariner is an easy-to-use,
high-performance Differential GPS (DGPS)
electronic charting and navigation system for the
serious mariner. The system offers submeter
navigation accuracy and advanced chart plotting to
confidently navigate even the most difficult seaway
safely.
NavMariner integrates a navigation/charting
processor, high-performance GPS/DGPS receiver and
a bright LCD color display. The ruggedized package
has been designed for the harsh marine environment.
Installation is also easy and flexible. A highly
integrated design minimizes the need for additional
electronics and associated cables, and provides a rich
set of interfaces to autopilots, radars, fish finders,
remote displays, etc.
Trimble has teamed with Nobeltec™, the leader in
marine navigation software, to provide an
easy-to-use, full-featured electronic charting and
navigation solution. Nobeltec's technology has been
specifically optimized for the NavMariner.
Cartography from NOAA/BSB and MapTech is also
supported.
The system features Nobeltec's GeoDraw™, a
revolutionary technology that significantly simplifies
chart management and display. GeoDraw delivers
seamless charting by stitching together local charts to
create a chart "quilt" that is automatically scaled and
rotated for optimal viewing.
The NavMariner incorporates the highest performance
GPS for marine navigation. Using Trimble's advanced
technology, NavMariner achieves submeter (better
than 3 feet) accuracy using standard DGPS beacons
for harbor approaches and in-harbor navigation. The
system combines an advanced 12-channel GPS
receiver and a digital, dual-channel differential beacon
receiver. Trimble's patented technology enables the
NavMariner to extend the availability of DGPS
coverage beyond conventional marine navigation
receivers. The system provides instantaneous
switching between beacon signals to ensure
continuous, reliable DGPS coverage for accurate
navigation.
For maximum safety and performance while cruising,
the NavMariner updates navigation information up to
2.5 times per second (as opposed to once a second for
conventional receivers). Trimble's proprietary
technology also enables the NavMariner to resist
interference from ship or land-based radar, radios, and
Inmarsat signals. A single, all-weather, combination
antenna receives both GPS and free differential
transmissions from radiobeacons such as the U.S.
Coast Guard DGPS System.
The NavMariner is anticipated to be available in May
through Trimble's Marine Dealer network.
Pioneering Marine Navigation
Trimble began its business by developing and
manufacturing LORAN-C receivers for marine
navigation in 1979. In 1986, Trimble introduced the
world's first integrated LORAN-GPS receiver for
marine navigation. In 1990, the company introduced
the NavGraphic II, the world's first GPS system with
digital maps on a compact disk. And in 1991, Trimble
was among the first to develop an Inmarsat-C/GPS
system. Trimble Marine has evolved from a business
providing basic location and navigation products to
one that offers complete solutions spanning the
breadth of the marine industry, including recreational
boating, commercial shipping and fishing;
hydrographic surveying; secure worldwide location
reporting, monitoring and messaging; marine
construction; and complete DGPS systems for safer
coastal navigation throughout the world. All based on
Trimble's ability to develop and deliver the most
advanced GPS hardware, software and
communications solutions covering the widest range of
applications. To date, vessels of all types and sizes,
ranging from recreational boats and America's Cup
racing yachts to commercial transports, high-speed
ferries, naval craft, construction barges utilize Trimble
GPS products and systems to achieve the optimum in
performance and reliability.
Trimble's NavMariner is the successor to the National
Marine Electronics Association (NMEA) award
winning NavGraphic XL.
