America has only 2% of the world's liquid crude oil reserves.
This figure INCLUDES Alaska and coastal regions. They are not some new
thing that Rush Limbaugh sleuthed out. Our "huge" shale-oil reserves
may not even break even energy-wise, and will seriously trash the
landscape and deplete local water supplies. They are touted as the
"next Saudi Arabia" by fools who don't understand energy inputs vs.
outputs. If you have a trillion potential barrels and it requires 999
billion barrels of fuel to extract them, you're only left with 1
billion barrels of net usable energy. Got it?
What part of that don't you "drill here, drill now" drones understand?
Why have so many failed to grasp the numbers of this situation? It's
exactly why America hit the wall of "peak oil" back in the early 70s.
The cheapest stuff was gone decades ago. We went overseas for good
reason and we've also been depleting domestic oil all that time.
Abiotic oil (the self-replenishing kind) has never been proved but it
lurks under the surface of cornucopian drilling propaganda.
There is a disturbing cadre of people who are clueless about American
oil consumption vs. domestic reserves. "Got a hemi in that? Heeyuk,
heeyuk! Wait, shut up - Rush is on. Turn it up! He's gonna talk about
oil. He's a real x-purt!"
Of equal importance, the U.S. consumes 21 million barrels of oil per
day, which is a billion barrels in 47 days and 7.6 billion barrels
each year. Consumption rates will likely rise due to mindless
population growth, even with fleets of hybrids. Optimistic estimates
of offshore drilling combined with ANWR yield less than 25 billion
barrels, which wouldn't even last 3.5 years if consumed alone.
Again, how can we "drill our way out of this" with such small liquid
crude reserves? Are people star-struck when they see "billions!" in
reserve figures, and don't bother to do simple math? Production is
meaningless outside the context of consumption. Never forget that and
don't let Limbaugh tell you otherwise.

You Go EA! Yes, the proposed Pacific Coast Off-Shore rigs -- the ones
that can produce 80 billion barrels of oil in their life cycle -- oh,
but those billion barrels do dazzle! You are wise to recommend doing the
math. First of all subtract 80% of whatever a U.S. oil well is expected
to produce: oil is a globally traded commodity, and the U.S. consumes
roughly 20% of this commodity. All oil is sold as a commodity to the
highest global bidder, including our own domestic oil. Which means that
we bid for our own oil just as other countries bid for their own, and
our oil. Therefore, roughly 80% of our domestically-produced oil is sold
to overseas corporations. So, multiply whatever is the latest "proven
U.S. reserve" by 0.2 to come up with what we can hold onto. Then divide
that result by 18 to 20 million (bbls per day domestic consumption) to
come up with the number of days' worth of proven reserve. I think you'll
find that figure a bit smaller and somewhat depressing to think about.
All told, all of the Pacific off-shore rigs pumping until the last
proven drop of oil can be produced would yield around 4 years' worth of
100% dedicated to the U.S. barrels of oil @ 18-20 million bbls/day.
Something else to think about: drilling in the Arctic Wildlife Preserve
would yield significantly less oil than the above example. As EA points
out, we currently have too many people clamoring for shrinking energy
resources, and we have now arrived at a demand equals production climax
as far as oil-based energy is concerned. There are some obvious answers,
but no easy implementations of those answers.

By 1980 the Sa'udis and the Russians were
running dry. Both were using water extraction
in too many wells. Putin was buying cheap oil
from Saddam to meet his deliveries.

and proved his thesis that petroleum has nothing
to do with fossils and is an inorganic substance
created in the deep hot core that is the center of

I would venture to say that if we shoved a spud
into every failed or failing hole in Oklahoma
and Texas and drilled 5 miles further 3 out of 5
would produce double what the 5 did originally.

The theory is simple: Crude oil forms as a natural
inorganic process which occurs between the mantle
and the crust, somewhere between 5 and 20 miles
deep. The proposed mechanism is as follows:
* Methane (CH4) is a common molecule found
in quantity throughout our solar system - huge
concentrations exist at great depth in the Earth.
* At the mantle-crust interface, roughly 20,000
feet beneath the surface, rapidly rising
streams of compressed methane-based gasses
hit pockets of high temperature causing the
condensation of heavier hydrocarbons. The
product of this condensation is commonly
known as crude oil.
* Some compressed methane-based gasses
migrate into pockets and reservoirs we
extract as "natural gas."
* In the geologically "cooler," more
tectonically stable regions around the globe,
the crude oil pools into reservoirs.
* In the "hotter," more volcanic and tectonically
active areas, the oil and natural gas continue
to condense and eventually to oxidize,
producing carbon dioxide and steam, which
exits from active volcanoes.
* Periodically, depending on variations of
geology and Earth movement, oil seeps to the
surface in quantity, creating the vast oil-sand
deposits of Canada and Venezuela, or the
continual seeps found beneath the Gulf of
Mexico and Uzbekistan. [That is how oil was
found in Pennsylvania and Ontario. BTW the
first working well is still pumping at Petrolia
Ontario- 30 miles East of Port Huron Mich ]

There are a number of observations across the oil
producing regions of the globe that support this
theory, and the list of proponents begins with
Mendelev (who created the periodic table of
elements) and includes Dr. Thomas Gold
(founding director of Cornell University
Center for Radiophysics and Space Research)
and Dr. J.F. Kenney of Gas Resources
Corporations, Houston, Texas.
In his 1999 book, "The Deep Hot Biosphere," Dr.
Gold presents compelling evidence for inorganic
oil formation. He notes that geologic structures
where oil is found all correspond to "deep earth"
formations, not the haphazard depositions we find
with sedimentary rock, associated fossils or even
current surface life.
He also notes that oil extracted from varying
depths from the same oilfield have the same
chemistry - oil chemistry does not vary as fossils
vary with increasing depth. Also interesting is the
fact that oil is found in huge quantities among
geographic formations where assays of
prehistoric life are not sufficient to produce the
existing reservoirs of oil. From where then did it
come?
Another interesting fact is that every oil field
throughout the world has out gassing helium.
Helium is so often present in oil fields that helium
detectors are used as oil-prospecting tools. Helium
is an inert gas known to be a fundamental product
of the radiological decay of uranium and thorium,
identified in quantity at great depths below the
surface of the earth, 200 and more miles below. It
is not found in meaningful quantities in areas that
are not producing methane, oil or natural gas. It is
not a member of the dozen or so common elements
associated with life. It is found throughout the solar
system as a thoroughly inorganic product.
Even more intriguing is evidence that several oil
reservoirs around the globe are refilling
themselves, such as the Eugene Island reservoir -
not from the sides, as would be expected from
cocurrent organic reservoirs, but from the bottom up.
Dr. Gold strongly believe[d] that oil is a "renewable,
primordial soup continually manufactured by the
Earth under ultrahot conditions and tremendous
pressures. As this substance migrates toward the
surface, it is attached by bacteria, making it appear
to have an organic origin dating back to the
dinosaurs."
