WEEKLY TROPICAL CYCLONE SUMMARY #8: SEPTEMBER 29 - OCTOBER 6, 1991

North Atlantic Basin: No tropical cyclones.

Eastern North Pacific Basin (E of 140 Deg. W):

Hurricane Jimena: At the start of the summary, Jimena was moving west-
northwest with winds weakening to 85 kt. Rapid weakening developed on 30
September, as Jimena became a tropical storm while turning northwest. It
weakened further into a depression on 1 October, and Jimena dissipated near
23N 132W on 2 October.

Hurricane Kevin: At the start of the summary period, Kevin was moving
west-northwest with winds peaking at 115 kt. Kevin maintained 105-115 kt
intensity through 2 October as it turned west and then west-southwest. It
then turned westward with a slow weakening to 80 kt winds by the end of
the summary period.

Hurricane Linda: Tropical Depression 14E formed near 15N 108W on 3 Octo-
ber. Rapid strengthening ensued, and the system intensfied to tropical
storm and then hurricane strength on 4 October. Winds peaked at 105 kt the
next day. Linda initially moved northwest, then moved north on 4 October
and north-northeast on 5 October. On 6 October, Linda turned westward and
weakened rapidly to 65 kt.

Central North Pacific Basin (180 Deg. W to 140 Deg. W): No tropical cyclones.

Western North Pacific Basin (W of 180 Deg. W):

Typhoon Nat: At the start of the summary period, Nat was moving north
through the South China Sea with 60 kt winds. Nat continued moving north to
north-northeast and reached 65 kt intensity just prior to landfall in China
on 1 October. Nat continued north and dissipated over China on 2 October.
There are no reports of damage or casualties at this time.

Typhoon Orchid: Tropical Depression 23W developed near 18N 142E on 3
October. It moved generally west through the rest of the summary period.
It became Tropical Storm Orchid on 4 October and Typhoon Orchid on 6 Octo-
ber. Winds reached 100 kt by the end of the summary period.

Tropical Storm Pat: Tropical Depression 24W developed near 14N 163E on
4 October. Moving first west, and then west-northwest, the depression
reached storm intensity on 5 October. At the end of the summary period,
Tropical Storm Pat had winds of 50 kt.

North Indian Ocean Basin: No tropical cyclones.

South Indian Ocean Basin (W of 135 Deg. E): No tropical cyclones.

South Pacific Ocean Basin (E of 135 Deg. E): No tropical cyclones.
