WEEKLY TROPICAL CYCLONE SUMMARY #246 APRIL 14 - 21, 1996

North Atlantic Basin: No tropical cyclones.

Eastern North Pacific Basin (E of 140 Deg. W): No tropical cyclones.

Central North Pacific Basin (180 Deg. W to 140 Deg. W): No tropical cyclones.

Western North Pacific Basin (W of 180 Deg.): No tropical cyclones.

North Indian Ocean Basin: No tropical cyclones.

South Indian Ocean Basin (W of 135 Deg. E):

Tropical Cyclone Itelle (TC-26S): At the end of the summary period, Itelle
was moving west-southwest through the open ocean with 140 kt winds. The
cyclone continued west-southwest through 16 April. Rapidly weakening took
place during this time, and Itelle weakened below hurricane strength on
16 April. The storm turned west on 17 April and weakened to a depression.
It dissipated later that day near 17S 54E.

Itelle passed near St. Brandon Island on 15 April. It reported 43 kt
sustained winds at 0000 UTC with a minimum pressure of 978.4 mb at 0600 UTC.
There are no reports of damage or casualties at this time.

Tropical Cyclone 27S: Tropical Cyclone 27S formed near 15S 116E on 16
April. Initially moving west-southwest, the system turned southwest on 17
April. This motion continued until the cyclone dissipated near 23S 111E on
19 April. Maximum sustained winds in this system were estimated at 30 kt.

South Pacific Ocean Basin (E of 135 Deg. E): No tropical cyclones.
