WEEKLY TROPICAL CYCLONE SUMMARY #178 DECEMBER 25, 1994 - JANUARY 1, 1995

North Atlantic Basin: No tropical cyclones.

Eastern North Pacific Basin (E of 140 Deg. W): No tropical cyclones.

Central North Pacific Basin (180 Deg. W to 140 Deg. W): No tropical cyclones.

Western North Pacific Basin (W of 180 Deg. W):

Tropical Depression Axel: At the start of the summary period, ex-typhoon
Axel was moving northwest over the South China Sea with 30 kt winds. The
system stalled near 19N 116E on 26 December, then it turned south and dis-
ipated the next day near 16N 115E. Details on Axel's passage through the Phil-
ippines were given in the last summary. There are no additional reports of
damage or casualties at this time.

Tropical Depression Bobbie: At the start of the summary period, ex-tropical
storm Bobbie was moving northwest with 25 kt winds. The system turned northeast
and dissipated near 24N 138E on 26 December. Although Bobbie affected the
Marshall and Mariana Islands, there are no reports of damage or casualties at
this time.

North Indian Ocean Basin: No tropical cyclones.

South Indian Ocean Basin (W of 135 Deg. E): No tropical cyclones.

South Pacific Ocean Basin (E of 135 Deg. E):

Tropical Cyclone William (TC-05P): Tropical Cyclone William formed near
13S 163W on 31 December. Initially moving south-southeast, the system turned
south-southwest at the end of the summary period. At that time, maximum winds
were estimated at 55 kt.

William was moving through the island groups east of Samoa during its de-
velopment. Aitutaki Island reported 40 kt sustained winds at 1800 UTC 1 Jan-
uary with a pressure of 993.8 mb 3 hr later. There are no reports of damage
or casualties at this time.
