WEEKLY TROPICAL CYCLONE SUMMARY #71: DECEMBER 6 - 13, 1992

North Atlantic Basin: No tropical cyclones.

Eastern North Pacific Basin (E of 140 Deg. W): No tropical cyclones.

Central North Pacific Basin (180 Deg. W to 140 Deg. W): No tropical cyclones.

Western North Pacific Basin (W of 180 Deg. W): No tropical cyclones.

North Indian Ocean Basin: No tropical cyclones.

South Indian Ocean Basin (W of 135 Deg. E):

Tropical Cyclone 04S: Tropical Cyclone 04S formed near 8S 50E on 7 De-
cember. Moving generally west, the system reached tropical storm intensity
later that same day. TC-04S continued to drift west through it lifetime.
Tropical storm intensity was maintained through 9 December, then weakening
and dissipation occurred near 8N 44E on 10 December. Maximum winds in this
system were 35 kt.

South Pacific Ocean Basin (E of 135 Deg. E):

Tropical Cyclone Joni (TC-03P): At the start of the summary period, Joni
was drifting south near the Ellice Islands with 50 kt winds. Joni turned
southwest on 7 December as it reached hurricane intensity, and this motion
continued through the next day. Joni turned south-southwest on 9 December
and south-southeast toward Fiji on 10 December while reaching a peak inten-
sity of 110 kt. Joni passed over and near the western Fiji Islands on 10
December. The storm passed almost directly over Viwa Island (which did not
report any data at the height of the storm) and about 30 miles west of Nadi.
Nadi reported a minimum pressure of 995.6 mb at 0600 UTC and peak sustained
winds of 48 kt at 1200 UTC. Higher winds and lower pressures probably oc-
curred between the three-hourly observations. After passing Fiji, Joni con-
tinued its south-southeastward track while steadily weakening. The system
weakened to a tropical storm on 12 December. Joni turned south on 13 Decem-
ber as it became extratropical near 29S 174W. There are no reports of dam-
age or casualties at this time.
