WEEKLY TROPICAL CYCLONE SUMMARY #242 MARCH 17 - 24, 1996

North Atlantic Basin: No tropical cyclones.

Eastern North Pacific Basin (E of 140 Deg. W): No tropical cyclones.

Central North Pacific Basin (180 Deg. W to 140 Deg. W): No tropical cyclones.

Western North Pacific Basin (W of 180 Deg.): No tropical cyclones.

North Indian Ocean Basin: No tropical cyclones.

South Indian Ocean Basin (W of 135 Deg. E):

Tropical Cyclone Guylianne (TC-22S): Tropical Cyclone 22S formed near 14S
59E on 20 March. Initially moving west-southwest, the cyclone continued this
motion through 21 March. Guylianne recurved south-southeast on 22 March as
it reached a peak intensity of 35 kt. The storm then rapidly weakened and
dissipated the next day near 22S 59E.

South Pacific Ocean Basin (E of 135 Deg. E):

Tropical Cyclone Beti (TC-23P): Tropical Cyclone 23P formed near 12S 171E
on 21 March. Initially drifting west-southwest, the cyclone became quasi-
stationary near 13S 169E the next day. The system resumed a west-southwest
track on 23 March, and this persisted through the end of the summary period.
TC-23P reached tropical storm strength and was named Beti on 23 March. At the
end of the summary period, it was packing 60 kt winds.

Malakula Island reported a 985 mb pressure on 24 March (exact time
unknown). There are no reports of damage or casualties from this part of
Beti's life at this time.
