WEEKLY TROPICAL CYCLONE SUMMARY #210 AUGUST 6 - 13, 1995

North Atlantic Basin:

Tropical Depression Six: At the start of the summary period, Tropical
Depression Six was moving onto the Mexican coast south of Tampico with 30
kt winds. The system continued northwest and dissipated over northeast Mexico
on 7 August. Although this system was near tropical storm strength when it
moved inland, there are no reports of damage or casualties at this time.

Hurricane Felix: Tropical Depression Seven formed near 15N 33W on 8 August.
Initially moving west, the system reached tropical storm strength later that
day. Felix continued west through 9 August, then it turned west-northwest on
10 August. The system turned northwest on 11 August as it reached hurricane
strength. Felix continued northwest on 12 August, then it turned north on 13
August as it reached a peak intensity of 115 kt. Felix weakened later that
day, and at the end of the summary period it was moving north with 85 kt
winds.

Felix was far from land during this period. Reconnaissance aircraft
measured a central pressure of 930 mb at 2328 UTC 12 August, with flight level
winds of 140-145 kt earlier that day. Ship A8SL reported 34 kt winds and a
pressure of 1002.1 mb at 0600 UTC 10 August. The next summary will have more
information on Felix.

Tropical Storm Gabrielle: Tropical Depression Eight formed near 24N 95W on
9 August. Initially drifting west, the system turned southwest on 10 August
as it reached tropical storm strength. Gabrielle stalled just off the Mexican
coast early on 11 August, and this allowed it to reach a peak intensity of
60 kt on that day. The storm resumed a westward track into Mexico north of
Tampico later on 11 August, and the system dissipated over land the next day.

A reconnaissance aircraft reported a minimum central pressure of 990 mb on
11 August and 70-75 kt winds at flight level. Later aircraft data suggested
that the pressure may have dropped to 988 mb by landfall. So far the only
report of damage is a sunken fishing boat in the Bay of Campeche. The crew was
rescued, and there are no other casualty reports.

Eastern North Pacific Basin (E of 140 Deg. W):

Tropical Depression Erick: At the start of the summary period, Erick was
drifting north with 30 kt winds. The cyclone continued this track until it
dissipated near 21N 121W on 7 August.

Hurricane Flossie: Tropical Depression 7E formed near 17N 107W on 9 August.
Initially moving north, the system turned northwest later that day as it
reached tropical storm strength. Flossie continued northwest on 10 August as
it reached a peak intensity of 65 kt. It maintained minimal hurricane
strength while turning west-northwest on 11 August, then it weakened to a
tropical storm on 12 August. Flossie then rapidly weakening and dissipated
near 25N 119W on 13 August.

Flossie had a large circulation that affected western Mexico and the
adjacent Pacific. Ship LAMF2 reported 37 kt winds and a 996.0 MB pressure at
0000 UTC 9 August as Flossie was first forming. Ship DVRUK4D reported 45 kt
winds at 0300 UTC 11 August, with a 1000.0 mb pressure 3 hr earlier. So far,
reports indicate that Flossie caused 5 deaths in Mexico.

Central North Pacific Basin (180 Deg. W to 140 Deg. W): No tropical cyclones.

Western North Pacific Basin (W of 180 Deg.):

Tropical Storm Helen: Tropical Depression 8W formed near 16N 133E on 7
August. The system initially followed a west to west-northwest track through
9 August, passing just north of Luzon in the Philippines. The depression
reached tropical storm strength on 9 August. Helen turned northwest on 10
August and north on 11 August, making landfall just east of Hong Kong early
on 12 August. The storm reached a peak intensity of 60 kt just prior to
landfall. Helen continued north into China and dissipated over land later
on 12 August.

Hong Kong reported a minimum pressure of 992 mb at 2300 UTC 11 August
along with 52 kt gusts. Maximum sustained winds were 30 kt at 0100 UTC 12
August. Shanwei in China reported 31 kt sustained winds and a 999.0 mb pres-
sure at 0000 UTC 12 August. Ship GOYF reported a 986.9 pressure at 0600 UTC
11 August, with 41 kt sustained winds 6 hr later. Ship KGJD reported 43 kt
sustained winds at 2100 UTC 11 August. There are no reports of damage or
casualties at this time.

North Indian Ocean Basin: No tropical cyclones.

South Indian Ocean Basin (W of 135 Deg. E): No tropical cyclones.

South Pacific Ocean Basin (E of 135 Deg. E): No tropical cyclones.
