WEEKLY TROPICAL CYCLONE SUMMARY #232 JANUARY 7 - 14, 1996

North Atlantic Basin: No tropical cyclones.

Eastern North Pacific Basin (E of 140 Deg. W): No tropical cyclones.

Central North Pacific Basin (180 Deg. W to 140 Deg. W): No tropical cyclones.

Western North Pacific Basin (W of 180 Deg.): No tropical cyclones.

North Indian Ocean Basin: No tropical cyclones.

South Indian Ocean Basin (W of 135 Deg. E):

Tropical Cyclone Bonita (TC-06S): At the start of the summary period,
Bonita was moving west-southwest near St. Brandon Island with 55 kt winds.
Bonita continued west-southwest and rapidly intensified on 8 January, then it
turned west as it reached a peak intensity of 135 kt the next day. The cyclone
turned west-northwest while weakening on 10 January, then it moved westward
into Madagascar on 11 January. Bonita weakened to a tropical storm while over
land. However, it re-intensified after moving into the Mozambique Channel on
12 January. Bonita regained hurricane strength and reached a second peak in-
tensity of 75 kt as it moved into Mozambique late on 13 January. At the end of
the summary period, Bonita was weakening over Mozambique.

No surface observations are available from near the storm center. Press
reports indicate that Bonita caused heavy rain and flooding over Mozambique
with 9 people killed and 5,000 homeless. There are no reports of damage or
casualties from Madagascar at this time.

Tropical Cyclone Hubert/Coryna (TC-07S): Tropical Cyclone Hubert formed
near 11S 97E on 8 January. Initially moving west, the system reached hurricane
strength later that day. Hubert moved west-southwest on 9 January as it
reached a peak intensity of 75 kt. The cyclone (renamed Coryna when it crossed
90E) turned west on 10 January and maintained this track through the rest of
its life. Hubert/Coryna weakened to a tropical storm on 10 January, then it
weakened to a depression the next day. The system dissipated near 15S 79E on
12 January.

South Pacific Ocean Basin (E of 135 Deg. E): No tropical cyclones.
