WEEKLY TROPICAL CYCLONE SUMMARY #57: AUGUST 30 - SEPTEMBER 6, 1992

North Atlantic Basin: No tropical cyclones.

Eastern North Pacific Basin (E of 140 Deg. W):

Tropical Storm Madeline: At the start of the summary period, Madeline was
approaching 140W with 35 kt winds. Rapid weakening ensued, and Madeline dis-
sipated near 16N 141W on 31 August. Since no advisories were issued on this
system by the Central Pacific Hurricane Center, it will not be included under
the Central North Pacific section.

Tropical Storm Newton: At the start of the summary period, Newton was
moving west-northwest with winds at a peak intensity of 45 kt. The storm
turned west and weakened to depression status the next day. Newton dissipated
near 15N 134W on 1 September.

Hurricane Orlene: Tropical Depression 17E formed near 10N 103W on 2 Sep-
tember. Moving westward, the system strengthened rapidly and reached both
tropical storm and hurricane intensity the next day. Orlene continued west
until 5 September when it turned west-northwest, with this motion continuing
through the rest of the summary period. Orlene continued to strengthen until
it reached a peak intensity of 125 kt, which it maintained at the end of the
summary period.

Tropical Depression 18E: Tropical Depression 18E formed near 12N 135w on
5 September. Moving west, the system entered the Central North Pacific on
6 September with 30 kt winds.

Central North Pacific Basin (180 Deg. W to 140 Deg. W):

Tropical Depression 18E: Tropical Depression 18E entered the Central North
Pacific on 6 September. At the end of the summary period, it was moving west
with 30 kt winds.

Western North Pacific Basin (W of 180 Deg. W):

Typhoon Omar: At the start of the summary period, Omar was moving north-
west with 115 kt winds. Omar continued a general west-northwest track through
3 September as it slowly weakened. The storm then west and weakened to tropical
storm intensity later on 3 September. Omar moved westward across Taiwan on
4 September. Chiayi reported sustained winds of 48 kt with gusts to 68 kt at
2100 UTC, while Hsinchu reported a minimum pressure of 982 mb at 1800 UTC.
Omar continued westward into China on 5 September, and the system dissipated
over China on 6 September. There are no reports of damage or casualties from
Taiwan or China at this time.

Tropical Storm Polly: At the start of the summary period, Polly was moving
north-northwest across the northern part of the Taiwan Straits with 50 kt
winds. Polly continued to move generally northwest into China on 31 August as
it weakened to a depression. Polly dissipated as a tropical cyclone while over
land, however, the remnant low turned north-northeast and moved into the Sea of
Japan before losing its identity. There are no reports of damage or casualties
at this time.

Typhoon Ryan: Tropical Depression 17W formed near 18N 149E on 1 September.
Moving erratically westward, the system reached tropical storm intensity later
that same day. Ryan drifted slowly northward on 2 September as it reached
typhoon intensity, and further intensification occurred on 3 and 4 September
as Ryan drifted erratically near 19N 147E. Ryan started moving northward on
5 September and north-northeast on 6 September as it reached a peak intensity
of 105 kt. At the end of the summary period, Ryan was continuing to move north-
northeast with 105 kt winds. Although Ryan affected the northern Mariana Is-
lands, there are no reports of damage or casualties at this time

Tropical Depression: A tropical depression formed near 19N 165E on 4 Sep-
tember. The system moved generally northeast through 5 September, then became
nearly stationary near 23N 166E on 6 September. Maximum winds thus far in the
system are 30 kt. This depression has affected Wake Isalnd, with several re-
ports indicating sustained winds of 25-30 kt with gusts to 40 kt. There are
no reports of damage or casualties at this time.

North Indian Ocean Basin: No tropical cyclones.

South Indian Ocean Basin (W of 135 Deg. E): No tropical cyclones.

South Pacific Ocean Basin (E of 135 Deg. E): No tropical cyclones.
