Western North Pacific Basin (W of 180 Deg. W):

Typhoon Lola: Tropical Depression 35W formed near 7N 146E on 1 December.
Initially moving west, the depression turned west-northwest the next day. The
system continued west-northwest on 3 December as it reached tropical storm
intensity, then it turned west the next day as it reached typhoon intensity.
Lola moved west into the central Philippine Islands on 5 December as it reached
a peak (to that time) intensity of 80 kt. Tayabas reported sustained winds of
68 kt at 2200 UTC. The Catanduanes radar station reported a minimum pressure
of 980.9 mb at 0400 UTC, along with sustained 52 kt winds. At the end of the
summary period, Lola was south of Manilla moving west into the South China
Sea with 75 kt winds. Second-hand press reports indicate that 64 people died
during Lola's track across the Philippines.

Tropical Storm Manny: Tropical Depression 36W developed near 7N 155E on 3
December. The system moved west through 4 December, then it turned west-north-
west on 5 December and maintained this track at the end of the summary period.
Tropical storm strength was reached on 4 December, and at the end of the sum-

storm intensity on 2 December and hurricane intensity the following day. A
peak intensity of 75 kt was reached just prior to landfall in the Villupuram-
Karaikal area of southern India on 4 December. While there are no meteoro-
logical reports available from near the center, Cuddalore reported 40 kt sus-
tained winds and a pressure of 998.6 mb at 0600 UTC. TC-02B turned northwest
after landfall and weakened to a low pressure system over southern India. While
the low did emerge over the Arabian Sea, it did not re-develop tropical cyclone
characteristics. This storm affected the Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry states of
India. Press reports indicate up to 70 people killed with 44,000 homes des-
