The boat caught fire after a royal visit.

It was 1960's slang for lighting a cigarette then throwing it away for
the romance of a gesture Humphrey Bogart might have used. (Like I said
they are a weird lot over there.)
I visited the ship 15 years ago ? on Tampa Bay. As compared to Columbus fleet, Bounty felt unseaworthy.
Power wasn't up to the ups and downs of a rough sea...no prep... prob swallowed water....EEERRRRRRRRrrrrrrrooooozackerk. Electrics weren't proofed. basic fuckup.
well, did you or did you not get a glimmer of the quake storm relationship at Costa Rico..OUT WITH IT !!
IF not please review the old maps for global quake flow in additon to the system used now. That'll top,of the old nut.

How about the fact the Duke of Edinburgh stopped smoking in 1947.
Oh and use of a search engine shows that the last serious fire aboard
a ship called HMS Victory happened in 1721. Now I know the
DOE is rather elderly but not that old I think.

Probably.
It was originally meant as a joke but it got a bit smn.
I hope the next presidunce doesn't read this thread, it could harm
international relations.
For any UStAnis reading this it is very unlikely (but not impossible
to believe) that the Duke of Edinburgh or any other civil "dignity"
set alight any historic building or ship by having a crafty drag
whilst on a tour.
Employ inexperienced, under aged and negligent tradespeople yes. But
for all the best of possible reasons.
To anyone not gifted with a need to read posts from smn, I hope you
don't get addicted.
The breadth of knowledge on the group is breathtaking as is the
inability of most to understand humour.
Just bear in mind if you do feel an urge to pound your head that they
will respond to all aspects of each minutae no matter what. And no
matter what sense it doesn't make.
And the best of it is the ******* idiots will be absolutely serious
when doing so. I know I should keep away but I love it because it
reminds me of the only time I enjoyed at school:
Playtime (at the infants and the first year or so of primary.)
Ah happy days.
My only regret?
That it wasn't immediately replaced by the internet/I couldn't afford
opiates and beer.

The Cutty Sark fire was caused by an electrical fire in
an industrial vacuum cleaner. Try again.

Ahh, relaying on, what Jack Linthicum sent me:
"Comment on Weatherlawyer's reply on the sinking of the Bounty replica.
'His "Bogied a fag end" is a mix of unrelated old nautical terms, "bogied" is drop off from the wind, "fag end" is the end of a rope. He must have the same "The WSailor's Word Book" that I got from the History Book Club.'

Jeff - it's Weatherlawyer, who's been in my killfile for a long time. There's a good chance he doesn't even recognise Italian as a language.
For my own amusement, I'd interpret his "bogied" as "bogart-ed", as in "don't bogart that joint my friend, pass it over to me" from the "Easy Rider" soundtrack. Here it means hanging on to the joint instead of taking a pull and passing it on. A very American piece of terminology.
With massive amounts of glue and duct tape, and possibly pieces of Meccano, he attaches this verb to "fag end", a very British expression meaning a cigarette butt. A "fag end" in American would be something very different, and Not Safe For Work.
The whole ramshackle assembly is nonsense in its context, as to bogart a fag end would be to hold on to in, thus ensuring there was no danger of it causing a fire on a wooden ship . . . . . .

It was certainly in use in the UK amongst musicians as early as
1970/1, because that's when I first heard it.

I most certainly do remember "Easy Rider", Alan.

I have to admit that although being born in Britain (but raised in Canada since the age of 5) and I do know what a "fag" is (cigarette), but I've never heard the expression "a fag end", LoL and yep it would be something much different in America, or for thyat matter Canada, where I reside.
