The Manila Observatory put a seismogram of the 6.7 shock online at
http://www.observatory.ph/cgi-bin/publications/pub_details.py?p=136
(note: all fields are optional in the fill-in field). It also caught
an earlier M5.2 earthquake in the Cotabato Trench.

This seismogram was taken before the major quake's aftershocks. It is
a very sensitive instrument, so of course the 6.7 sent it off the
scale, but it picked up the smaller waves - it's amazing how long they
go on afterwards in both quakes. Also, the seismogram is a good
visual demonstration of just how much difference there is energy
release during roughly 1 point on a logarithmic magnitude scale.

Also, Dr. Wikipedia notes that PAGASA will be deploying 10 of the
University of the Philippines' landslide early warning systems in five
susceptible areas this year. Would that help much for a sudden shock
like an earthquake, I wonder.

"It seems to me that every phenomenon, every fact, itself is the
really interesting object. Whoever explains it, or connects it with
other events, usually only amuses himself or makes sport of us, as,
for instance, the naturalist or historian. But a single action or
event is interesting, not because it is explainable, but because it is
true."

In the future, consider using a different type of thermometer. There is a
type you can swipe over your forehead. There is another type you can
stick up your ass (not recommended). And take 2 aspirin.

I was wondering if Belba/Barb was a kook for several years. I think I
have the answer now. k000k!

What a strange person you are, Felix. Perhaps another 1-year
sabbatical might help. Consider yourself blocked from now on.

As for the Manila Observatory seismogram, I made a couple of errors:

-- It really was closer to 2 points than 1.

-- I don't know the depth of the trench quake's epicenter or the
distance of either epicenter from the machine.

It's difficult from online news to get an idea of the casualties from
this quake. Right now, the "Manila Bulletin" at
http://www.mb.com.ph/articles/350582/900-aftershocks is quoting an
Army official as saying that "based on their latest count, the number
of people killed has reached 48, while 56 were injured, and 92 are
still missing."

Have mercy on the afflicted, even when they afflict you.

(Unless it's a netkop. It's always open season on them; Northridge
refugees included.)

I think he is having psychological problems. Had he been a little less
explicit with me some time ago, I might have taken a different
viewpoint. Too late now. If he doesn't get back on his meds it's going
to be another range war.

It's all very sad but deep down, I just love to throw stones I guess.
