I counted over 40 listed on NEIC at
http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/recenteqsww/Quakes/quakes_all.php
since 8:33 this morning at epicenter. Wow!

Yo, California - keep it down. We're trying to have a hurricane over
here.

Automatic solutions. As they're reviewed, they're being
downgraded. One of them dropped to 2.9!!! Talk about
the computers getting confused. Not surprising, really.
I think this is what they call a "vigorous sequence".
Therefore the ground hasn't stopped moving before the
next one starts.

Brawley has had swarms before but they were lucky to get
into the 3's.

The area is suspected to be a spreading center. Basically
it's the northern terminus of the East Pacific Rise before
it turns into the San Andreas transform fault.

Maybe we'll get a volcano? I could go for a nice cinder
cone. The Salton Buttes are in this area, a group of small
lava domes. Last eruption may have been about 8500ya.

Quite an increase from 3 or so. Also the largest ones were stronger
than usual.

From this http://geohazards.usgs.gov/cfusion/qfault/qf_web_disp.cfm?disp_cd=C&qfault_or=272&ims_cf_cd=cf
, I think it overlies the suspected spreading center, so perhaps no
volcano this year. Slip rate could be as much as 25 mm/year there.
It's an interesting place.

Pretty sure of myself. I had tabs for each one open in my browser
and on refreshing, one of them stayed 5.3, one dropped to 4.9, and
the third dropped to 2 something.

Upon examining my inbox (subscribed to 'Big Quake' email list),
the first of the three was indeed updated (downgraded) to a 2.6M.

It is a *nascent* spreading center. In a few Ma, the connection between
the EPR and the Juan de Fuca via the San Andreas fault system will be
completed.

4.4 M. @ 00:12:11   ANTOFAGASTA, CHILE

6.6 M. @ 15:05:37   MOLUCCA SEA

OTOH since I am not bound by the mores of contemptorary "science"
considering such to be the dark ages, so to speak, I am free to equate
one with another and in the absence of similar data outside the USA,
imagine the overall magnitude to be in keeping with the tropical
anomalies from the same time period.

To wit:
Several severe typhoons winding down from Cat 3s and 4s.

the swarm, an eyepopper thru email notice as the box was USGS USGS USGS USGS..

could be natural progress northward toward the Fraser River from Victoria, last swarm center or result of geothermal drilling or both.

Itsnot the Butte at Niland, Eq crossroads at Salton Sea. The Butte, a frequnet periodic minor swarm area, is waaaaaaay down the list at USGS.

A vaguely similar non rational EQ relationship aligned with the last Gulf storm.
