'Honeycomb Heaven, a 3-D fractal created by Daniel White
Hannah Devlin
It may look like an underwater cave but this is the image of a three-
dimensional fractal, the result of years of work by a computer
programmer.
Daniel White, from Bedford, claims to have made the first “real” 3-D
solutions of the Mandelbrot set, groups of equations used to produce
fractal images.
Two-dimensional fractals are familiar snowflake shapes produced by
repeatedly feeding a number through the same equation. Three-
dimensional solutions to these equations are much harder to find.
Mr White said that his images “are illustrative of the powerful beauty
of maths”.
