SOIL BIOENGINEERING FOR STREAMBANK STABILIZATION - OCT 26-28
Date: 980907
From: oc...@aesop.rutgers.edu
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey
Cook College Continuing Professional Education Programs
COURSE DESCRIPTION
Soil Bioengineering is an emerging science that brings together
ecological, biological and engineering technologies to stabilize
eroding sites and restore riparian corridors. These techniques can
replace traditional erosion control structures such as riprap and
gabions under certain conditions. Streambanks, lakeshores, tidal
shorelines and eroded upland areas may all be successfully revegetated
using soil bioengineering techniques if correctly designed and
implemented.
This course will discuss how and where soil bioengineering techniques
can be applied based on certain hydrological, geomorphological, and
environmental site conditions. The course will cover:
* Exposure to the Rosgen Stream Classification System
* Evaluating site suitability
* Selecting appropriate bioengineering techniques for particular
sites and determining project success
* Selecting and handling suitable plant materials
* Assessing the ecological and biological impacts on water quality
and wildlife
* Implementing projects in compliance with current regulations
Participants will visit previously installed soil bioengineering
projects throughout central and northern New Jersey to help reinforce
classroom material.
WHAT WILL YOU LEARN?
At the conclusion of this program, participants will be able to:
* Understand the range of applications and variety of soil
bioengineering techniques used to stabilize streambanks, shorelines
and to a limited extent, upland slopes;
* Effectively evaluate a site to determine its suitability for
treatment with soil bioengineering technology, keeping in mind the
interdisciplinary nature of this science;
* Select appropriate plant materials for use in soil bioengineering
systems;
* Successfully design, implement and evaluate some commonly used soil
bioengineering techniques.
WHO SHOULD ATTEND
* Consulting Engineers
* Environmental Consultants
* Soil Conservation Specialists
* Mine and Landfill Operators
* Landscape Architects and Contractors
* Resource Conservation Specialists
FACULTY COORDINATOR
Christopher Miller, MS., is a Plant Materials Specialist with the
USDA-Natural Resources Conservation Service, providing technical
assistance on plant materials use and application in a six state
region. His education includes a B.S. degree in Agronomy from Penn
State University and an M.S. degree in Plant Science from South Dakota
State University. He currently provides soil bioengineering training
and technical assistance to USDA-NRCS field offices in the
Mid-Atlantic and Southern New England area. Other continuing
professional education courses he has taught include: "Landscape
Restoration", "Plant Identification for Wetland Delineation", and
"Sediment & Erosion Control".
ADDITIONAL FACULTY
Timothy Dunne, Resource Conservationist, USDA-NRCS
Linda Rivero, Area Engineer, USDA-NRCS
Industry Professionals

WINTER VEGETATION IDENTIFICATION FOR WETLAND DELINEATION
November 12 & 13, 1998 - Bernards Township, NJ
Tuition: $395
Wetland delineations become more difficult in winter, but most
species of vegetation remain available for identification if you know
what to look for. This two-day field course will present techniques
for identifying more than 100 species of woody and herbaceous
vegetation commonly encountered when delineating wetlands in winter.
You will receive expert instruction in every aspect of the plant
identification process in winter including bark, twigs, buds,
silhouettes, seed heads and pods, withered herbs and fallen leaves.
FRESHWATER WETLAND CONSTRUCTION TECHNIQUES
November 17 - 19, 1998
Tuition: $645
During this three-day program, you will learn the techniques of
wetland construction and mitigation used by the experts. You will
discover the best ways to:
* Choose suitable construction sites
* Prepare basic plant specifications and order plants
* Determine soil suitability and specify soil amendments
* Calculate a wetland water budget
* Specify fundamental hydrologic design elements
* Design a monitoring plan
STABILIZATION AND RESTORATION OF DISTURBED SITES
New Brunswick, New Jersey
January 28 & 29, 1999
Tuition: $225
Establishing and restoring appropriate vegetative cover to highly
disturbed or eroding areas is often a great challenge. Unfortunately,
many landscape restoration projects "fail" due to improper seedbed
preparation, poor seeding/planting techniques, inappropriate
vegetation selection or poor timing. This two-day course is designed
to assist environmental and landscape professionals in evaluating
sites for effective vegetation establishment. Both restoration and
stabilization theory and technique will be discussed as they apply to
vegetating areas such as streambanks, shorelines, roadsides, mined
areas, landfills and other difficult sites.
PLANNING HYDROLOGY FOR WETLAND CONSTRUCTION
February 24 - 26, 1999
Tuition: $525
Most people would agree that water is the most important part of any
wetland - yet planning appropriate hydrology can be the most
challenging and complex aspect of a wetland construction project. This
three-day course will provide you with the basics for planning sources
and quantities of water to support wetland construction and
restoration. The methods taught will focus on the particular needs of
wetland mitigation planning rather than simply adopting methods from
other disciplines.
