Afghan president concerned at deaths caused by cold weather

Kabul (dpa) - Afghan President Hamid Karzai has ordered the
establishment of a commission to provide assistance to vulnerable
communities after expressing concern Sunday at the number of people
who died in the recent cold spell.

A statement released in Kabul said that Karzai was "deeply'' concerned
by the deaths, especially among children, caused by cold weather in
different provinces of Afghanistan.

The exact number of deaths due to the cold weather was not revealed
however.

The commission is to include the ministries of health, rural
rehabilitation and development, interior, defence, public works, urban
development, refugees, the Department for National Security, and Kabul
Municipality, with cooperation from the United Nations and the United
States Agency for International Development.

It will be tasked with providing emergency response and assistance to
the people most affected by the cold spell, and taking preventive
health measures.

After continual years of drought in Afghanistan, heavy snow has now
covered most parts of the country. dpa km sr
