When a new male invades the pride and drives off the reigning alpha male,
the new leader's next step is to kill the cubs. A mother lion will put up
token resistance but will not relinquish her life to defend her offspring,
as is the case with mama grizzly and certain other species.
When a male lion feeds on a kill, some of them allow their cubs to feed
along simultaneously. When the lionesses feed on the kill, they do not
allow the younguns to participate until they are finished. Even a mother
lion will slap her own child away until she has eaten.
