In your case, I believe that you will need to focus on the differences
between acedemia and the "real world". In acedemia you tend to take only
a small part of the big picture and work it to death resulting in a
highly accurate result but only for a portion of the total problem. IN
the real world you will need to look at the whole system but only have a
reasonably good accuracy. Therefore, short cuts, rules of thumb,
imperical models are necessary to handle those elements that can not be
handled in a totally algorithmic way.
