Postdoctoral Research Associate

Oak Ridge National Laboratory has an immediate opening for a
postdoctoral research position in the area of residual stress
measurement and analysis. The research is funded by Department of
Energy as part of concerted industry-laboratory efforts to address
materials issues in energy intensive industries such as pulp and paper,
primary metals, glass, etc. The selected individual will be working
with staff members to primarily carry out measurements and finite
element analysis of residual stresses in industrial sized components,
while maintaining a close interaction with other tasks of the project
(e.g., corrosion and microstructure studies). The experimental
measurements will be conducted using a state-of-the-art neutron residual
stress mapping system at the High Flux Isotope Reactor in Oak Ridge
National Laboratory and complimentary X-ray residual stress instruments.
Computing facilities for the finite element modeling research include
powerful work stations and several massively parallel computers.

To be considered, the applicants must have earned a Doctorate in an
appropriate field such as Materials Engineering, Materials Science, or
Mechanical Engineering within the last five years. Demonstrated
knowledge of metallurgy and mechanics of solids are required, as is
working experience with commercial finite element packages, such as
ANSIS and ABAQUS. In addition, the applicant must possess excellent
written and verbal communication skills. Experience with multiple
computer systems, such as Unix workstations, Macintosh/OS, and MS-DOS
are highly desirable. Familiarity with X-ray or neutron powder
diffraction is preferred, but not required.

Interested persons are invited to submit a curriculum vitae including
research experience, a list of publications, and names and addresses of
three references, to the address below. Only applicants currently
authorized to work in the United States will be considered for this
position. Application dealine: November 17, 1995. Oak Ridge National
Laboratory is an equal opportunity employer committed to building and
maintaining a diverse workforce.
