Description: Welding of materials for manufacture & repair.

What is a Smith 55-T plasma torch worth?
I bought this some years ago and within 6 months Smith was bought out and the supply of consumables has pretty much dried up. I'm looking to sell it and replace it with another torch. What would be a fair asking price? It runs fine, and has quite a few consumables with it, but the long nozzles that I liked so well are gone, burned up the last... more »

1/16" MIG wire in a Millermatic 251
I have some MIG welding wire that I am not sure if I should keep. Most pressing is a roll of 1/16" aluminum 4043 wire that I am not sure if I should sell. Would anyone know if it is way too big for this Millermatic and could I ever achieve good results with it, and is it too big for the gun that is on it.... more »

Welding chain
At times, like when you want to make a loop of chain, and when you just need to make something up, what is the best way to weld shut a piece of chain? As in the case of when you cut a link, and want to put it back together again. Is the best solution a cold shut, then run a hot bead around the stub?... more »

Hardfacing question
How well does the hardfacing material put down with an arc welder adhere to the material? A friend was talking about hardfacing mild steel to make woodworking tools, and I was wondering whether it would be a better approach to use something like the Kasenite hardening compound or to use a hardfacing rod. It looks like some of the hardfacing materials can be... more »

FS -- Miller Maxtron 450 TIG,Stick,MIG welder 1/3 phase
This is basically a dream welder that "does everything". Comes with a 60M wire feed, torches, MIG guns, etc. It works from 3 phase and 1 phase (at a slightly reduced duty cycle). Price offered to rec.crafts.metalworking participants is UNDISCLOSED, but much less than what I expect to get elsewhere.... more »

repair hot dipped galvanizing
After a reapair I have and area where I machined off the galvanizing on a hot dipped piece of steel. I have some zinc and I was wondering if there was a way I could apply the zinc rod sort of lie soldering to repair the damaged galvanized coating. In the past we have sprayed the area with cold- gal and this has not been satifactory.... more »

Crazy idea?
I'm thinking of brazing HSS planer blades onto the blades of my mower to get a better cut (obviously with suitable grinding to provide a suitable mounting area at the correct angle). Crazy?
