Henrico Police are searching for a suspect accused shooting an elderly
man during an attempted robbery Saturday.

The victim was walking with a 6-year-old to the store in the 6000 block
of Nine Mile Road late Saturday evening when they were approached by a
suspect armed with a handgun. The suspect demanded money from the
victim, then shot him when the victim said he had no money.

The suspect then fled the scene on foot. The 6 year old was not injured
in the incident.

The gun shot victim, identified by police as John Vaughan, is recovering
in the hospital from serious injuries.

The suspect is described as a black male, possibly a teenager, standing
about 5 foot 9 with a thin build. Police said he has short hair and was
last seen wearing a white tee shirt and gray pants.

Investigators said a nearby group of teenagers likely witnessed the
incident. Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at
780-1000.
