Diodes instead of an OR gate
Hi, I've recently designed a circuit in 74LS (that I plan to redo in 74HCT) that requires just a single OR gate. Rather than haul in an entire IC I was intending to replace this with Schottky diodes on each line. I couldn't find a lot of information online about this being done, so I thought I would ask the good people here if there's any unwanted side-effects (beside the forward voltage drop) that I should be aware of.... more »

LCB - Linear Current Booster -- any reference designs ?
Could some electronics guru please clarify the difference between a linear current booster (LCB) and a buck converter ? Also is there any reference design around ? Googling the topic has not been too helpful.

Format complex cell in OpenOffice?
Folks, Unfortunately spreadsheet programs store complex numbers as text, meaning one can't truncate to a reasonable length and so the cells all overflow. For Excel there is some lengthy Basic script to fix this but not for OO. Anybody know a trick how to get them into scientific notation with, say,... more »

joule capacity of surface-mount resistors
Has anybody dumped a lot of energy into surfmount resistors, fast? I'd like to discharge about 35 joules of energy from some electrolytic caps, in a couple tenths of a second maybe, and it would be cool to use a few 2512 or some such resistors. I suppose I could try it... -- John Larkin Highland Technology, Inc... more »

Ever heard of this...
Ever heard of this... Just got a flyer from American Express stating that if I charge the $100 application fee for "Global Entry" (*) to my Platinum Card, they will give me a $100 credit. (*) "Global Entry is a U.S. government program that allows expedited customs and immigration clearance at most U.S. airports for... more »

Third Party Tests Conducted
On the right side of this page is the PDF download of a third party testing of the the E-Cat HT. There were two tests 96 hrs and 116 hrs. [link] Anyone care to read and review the paper. This could finally the start of cheap power. "the E-Cat has roughly four orders of magnitude more specific energy and... more »

CM Chokes sometimes suck
I'm working with a group designing avionics equipment and they recently hired an EMI guru. He insists on placing CM chokes on every single ended I/O signal line. These signals can be floating 100K thermistors that are received by a Pi filter (100K resistor and two 1.0uF caps to ground). The miniture CM chokes are 1k at 100MHz (1.6uH).... more »
