OT: Something better than Google to search NGs?

Looks like Google might have followed that dreaded trend to compromise
functionality for glitz. Since today a fancy gray screen turns up that
mostly shows only one message from a found thread. Clicking on "expand
all" does nothing.

Is there a better search engine for usenet? Preferably one that sticks
to text format and shows all messages of a thread right away. Or is
there a trick to coax Google back to the old display?

Seems to still be working the same old way here.

No idea but it's a very different looking interface. I wish there was a
clean text-only version.

Are we talking about Google Groups ??

Looks the same as it ever did to me.

Aha! Down in the thread you have to click on "Show Quoted Text".

It didn't this morning. Now I did the very same "Advanced Group Search"
and it shows some more posts per thread. Not like in the good old days
but at least six posts per page.

It always showed the text but only one post at a time (where I knew
there were dozens).

No "might" about it. 8-(

The new paradigm is to collapse all but the newest posts to a thread.
Only the usernames are shown for the old posts.

>Clicking on "expand all" does nothing.
>

If you click on the single line which appears for a collapsed post,
that post should expand.

The new code is buggy.
There have been times (since their latest "improvement")
where I have opened a thread in 3 new tabs
before I got one to work right. Eventually it always does.

Nope.

Google has the lowest latency.
Threading on all the others
(which use readily-available BBS software)
is FAR inferior to what Google does with their browse_frm format.

I haven't seen one yet which had its own search engine.
On those, you're stuck with Google's Web search engine
(or whoever's) and the accompanying (outrageous) latency.

>Or is there a trick to coax Google back to the old display?

I have noticed that any post which has highlighted text in it
is displayed expanded.
Appending ?q=a+the to the URL should do the trick.
http://groups.google.com/group/sci.electronics.design/browse_frm/thread/49c4def5d998df4e/2cedc4ad8d55792e?q=a+the

Again, you might have to try to open it multiple times.

If your URL contains browse_thread ,
see if substituting browse_frm gives you what you want.

Same with some large and otherwise excellent semiconductor
manufacturers, to the point where their sites became so useless that I
quit designing in their parts. Which, once in production, means big
bucks lost. All they'd have to do is consult with some actual users. But
they don't.

I am beginning to miss databooks. Big time. In fact, I have begun moving
some of them back into the office. The way it goes we might some day
migrate back to the old Gutenberg method because it works and even some
marketing kid can't mess that up too badly.

Such "strategies" make no sense to me.

They didn't :-(

Latency isn't a big concern. Usually I am looking whether stuff had
already been discussed at length before posting a too similar question
again. Heck, even if threading is inferior that's better than threading
that doesn't work at all.

Maybe the frm trick from your other post works.

Joerg, Did you miss "Expand All" at the top left?

I'm certainly not seeing anything to have heartburn over.

Yes but it no workie. Maybe they fixed it by now, haven't checked
because I am doing a backplane interface on the other PC. Analog is a

Oh, it takes more than that for heartburn plus we have a good Schnaps
for that ;-)

I don't have many databooks, but I'm an avid datasheet collector. I download
everything and bookmark nothing: it might be gone tomorrow. Of course I only
have the DS of things that I use, or that interest me, or that I had never
heard of but found mentioned in this group.

(quick count)

Well, I have about 2000 pdfs (datasheets and app notes combined) from about
60 mfgrs. Of course a mere nothing compared to all their data books, and not
leisurely browsable on the john.

A wireless home network, and an old laptop with a wireless network
car will fix that. You could even order more toilet paper, in an
emergency! ;-)

BTW: If I had all my databooks in the bathroom, I wouldn't be able to
get to the toilet. :(

They changed the format a few weeks back, and there are, well a few
"bugs".
Sometimes it chops off the bottom 3/4 of the screen on me, along with
that "expand all" thing which happens sometimes as well. Some times
all the posts will be numbered "1".

Looks like they didn't feed the code monkeys enough peanuts on this
update.

Dave :)

Apparently you didn't come across it in the past, but it's not new.

If the OP sets the x-no-archive flag,
after his post expires, all the numbering turns to "1"s.
If someone else in the thread sets his flag,
after that post expires, all posts branching from his
will have screwy numbering.

True for all of them so far.
An actual QC department would be an idea.
