THE PROGRAMME IN BRIEF
The Joint Research Centre of Ispra (I) and the University of Venice
are the organisers of a summer school on sensitivity analysis in Venice,
July 25-30, 1999.
The school is addressed to professionals, analysts and researchers with
elementary experience in mathematical modelling and statistics. Advertising
is being sent to consultancy agencies, banks, national statistical
offices, officers in the European institutions -- such as the statistical
office (EUROSTAT), the European Environment Agency, various EC directorates
general --, Universities and Research Centres.
The maximum number of participants is 60.
The notes for the course are based on a Handbook for Sensitivity Analysis
currently being written for the publisher John Wiley and Sons
and expected to appear in 1999.

WHEN AND WHERE
The summer school will be held in 1999 from the 25th to the 30th of July at
the
Venice International University (V.I.U.) center for higher education and
research, located in the island of San Servolo in Venice.
REGISTRATION FEE
The registration fee is 1,000 ECU and includes accommodation (7 nights), 5
lunches (Monday to Friday), coffee breaks, and a welcome reception
cocktail. Dinners are not included. No discounts are available. The fee is
reduced to 800 ECU if accommodation is not requested.
DEADLINES
The deadline for registration is the 31st of January 1999. The deadline for
payment of the fee is the 30th of April 1999.
INDICATIVE TIME TABLE
The school will start on the afternoon of Sunday, the 25th of July, with an
opening ceremony in the Auditorium of the University of Venice located in
Campo Santa Margherita. The opening lecture will be followed by a welcome
reception. Lectures will take place from Monday (the 26th ) to Friday (the
30th ) in San Servolo. An indicative time table is:
9.30-10.20 lecture
10.20-10.50 coffee break
10.50-11.40 lecture
11.40-12.30 lecture
12.30-14.00 lunch at the canteen of the University
14.00-14.50 lecture
14.50-15.40 lecture
15.40-16.10 coffee break
16.10-18.10 hands on session
ACCOMMODATION
Accommodation for the participants will be arranged in Venice. However,
when subscribing, any participant may decide to arrange his/her own
accommodation and pay a discounted fee (200 ECU less).
SCIENTIFIC PROGRAMME
The preliminary programme contains 25 lectures (of 50 minutes each) plus 4
"hands on" sessions of two hours each. Of the 25 lectures, 17 are
theoretical and methodological and 8 are on applications. Three different
software (UNICORN, SAMPLE2, and PREP&SPOP) are available for the "hands on"
sessions.
CURIOSITIES
"Ma ti xe de S. Servolo?"
(Are you from S. Servolo?)
In old times this was amount to inquiring about mental health,
as the Island of S. Servolo hosted Venice psychiatric hospital. Once on
Venice mainland, our students should hence be cautious as "I am attending a
course at S. Servolo" might be interpreted with suspicion by the locals.
