Missing Heritability

Statistical Epistasis and Functional Brain Imaging Support a Role of Voltage-Gated Potassium Channels in Human Memory
Abstract:-
Despite the current progress in high-throughput, dense genome scans, a major portion of complex traits' heritability still remains unexplained, a phenomenon commonly termed “missing heritability.”... more »

Epistatic, heritable relationships of genes to telomeres.
|

G. Stadler et al., “Telomere position effect regulates DUX4 in human facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy,” Nature Structural and Molecular Biology, doi:10.1038/nsmb.2571, 2013.
JE :-
Genes located directly next to a telomere are silenced (unfortunately this basic fact does not silence Dawkins et al). As telomeres shorten with age, genes up to 1000 kilo bases away may be affected demonstrating a unique heritable epistatic relationship between alleles and telomeres located on both ends of each chromosome. Of course, none of the above can possibly be true since Fisher's 1900's mathematics proved that absolutely no epistasis is heritable in sexual species conveniently allowing e to excised entirely from Hamilton's Rule...... more »

Abundance Is Not Enough: The Need for Multiple Lines of Evidence in
|
| |
Abstract
The fossil record is the only source of information on the long-term
dynamics of species assemblages. Here we assess the degree of
ecological stability of the epifaunal pterioid bivalve assemblage
(EPBA), which is part of the Middle Devonian Hamilton fauna of New York
the type example of the pattern of coordinated stasis, in which long... more »

Agriculture in China Predates Domesticated Rice: Discovery of Ancient
|
| |
May 17, 2013 Archaeologists have made a discovery in southern
subtropical China which could revolutionise thinking about how ancient
humans lived in the region. They have uncovered evidence for the first
time that people living in Xincun 5,000 years ago may have practised
agriculture -- before the arrival of domesticated rice in the region.... more »

Amblystegiaceae
|
| |
The Amblystegiaceae are a clade of mosses primarily found within damp
habitats. As currently circumscribed, the Amblystegiaceae are not yet
supported by any morphological synapomorphies; it has only been
resolved by molecular analysis combining both chloroplast and nuclear
loci (Vanderpoorten et al. 2002).... more »

Biological basis for a pat on the back?
|
| |
Could there be a biological reason why we pat each other on the back as a showing of good will? This is highly speculative but hopefully fun.
Could it be that when you pat someone on the back you also put light pressure on the left lymphatic duct, which is the largest lymphatic vessel. It starts from the second lumbar vertebra and extends to the root of the neck, where it drains into the circulation system for removal. By patting or messaging that area you help push the lymph through the duct and into the blood circulation system to excrete out. Remember that the lymph system, unlike the circulation system does not have a pump, the heart.... more »

Heritable Epistasis
|
| |
"Our findings help us to understand processes that occur during early human development and the differentiation of a stem cell into specialized cells, which ultimately form tissues in the body," says co-lead author Joseph R. Ecker, a professor and director of Salk's Plant Molecular and Cellular Biology Laboratory and holder of the Salk International Council Chair in Genetics.... more »

Aquatic Ape theory
|
| |
The Aquatic Ape theory was mentioned favourably by David Attenborough,
who is a British TV personality who fronts serious wildlife programmes.
This produced a chorus of criticism from the mainstream establishment.
Now in my view it is very unwise to call the Aquatic Ape hypothesis
"unscientific", because that risks confusion with biological theories... more »
