News: Researchers document rapid, dramatic 'reverse evolution' in the threespine stickleback fish
Researchers document rapid, dramatic 'reverse evolution' in the threespine stickleback fish [moderator's note: There's a pretty good comparison pair of photos in one of our daily papers if you want to look; here's the link: [link] Enjoy. - JAH] Evolution is supposed to inch forward over eons, but sometimes, at least in... more »

"Inductive intelligence" or a "generalist" cognitive bias in human
I googled "inductive intelligence" & hit on John W Edser' post of the last year. I share his frustration with IQ measures & came up with an explanation of why real-time tests can't capture a high-level generalization ability, caused by a longer-range induction. Basically, induction is a search for matches/patterns, & deduction is an... more »

What is "Cumulative Selection" and how does it work?
Having read Richard Dawkins' "The Blind Watchmaker", I would like to get a better understanding of what "cumulative selection" theory is, and how it is believed to work. Is it part of "mainstream" Darwinist views, or is it only Dawkins' own idea? Any leads to relevant information would be much appreciated!... more »

carbon dioxide up, will evolution , accelerate?
...atmosphere has reached a record high, according to new figures that renew fears that climate change could begin to slide out of control. Scientists at the Mauna Loa observatory in Hawaii say that CO2 levels in the atmosphere now stand at 387 parts per million (ppm), up almost 40% since the industrial revolution and the highest... more »

Evolution is NOT random
So why do people keep discussing it as though it were? Evolution is a deterministic process taking place in a deterministic world. The only "randomness" about it is in our own minds due to our inability to completely understand, track and predict what is going on. This randomness is epistemological and relative, and is not a real feature of... more »

Memes controlling evolution
...JE:- Darwinian fitness is predicated on reproduction and not survival. Your argument represents the Spencerian "survival of the fittest" and "red in tooth and claw" misinterpretation of Darwinism. Memes, like genes, exist within bodies such that the "knee bone is connected to the thigh bone",... more »

Memes controlling evolution
I was thinking about memes and evolution. What do you think of the following idea? Darwinism is nearly always thought of as related to genetics. However, I think the concept could be also alive and well in the idea of memes. You probably have heard of the idea of memes. Little ideas or thoughts that jump from mind to mind and survive like benevolent or malicious... more »

Evolved Human Growth Periods
More and more I think that there are certain 'windows of opportunity' in human infant development that set the pattern for the rest of that person's life. There is a short window to learn our native language. Adults can never learn a foreign language as well as infants going through that language window.... more »

'Missing' Ancestors Of Today's Animals May Not Be Missing After All ScienceDaily (May 8, 2008) - An event as simple as the world's first bite may have sparked an ancient "explosion" of life 500 million years ago that led to the rise of the broad groups of animals that are still alive today.... more »

molecular arrangement of an inversion
I cant find any explanation of how an inverted piece of dna is able to reintegrate. My problem is that if you turn the piece 180 degrees 5' becomes 3' and vice versa. does the information bearing strand switch strand when it's reattached ? Or can a strand have a part that is arranged in the opposite 3' to 5' direction?... more »
