Ecologists flock to Liverpool
Society for Ecological Restoration Conference
September 4th-7th 2000
The first week of September will see ecologists, and ecological artists,
students and community representatives come to Liverpool from all over the
world for a very special event.
The focus will be ecological restoration, the art and science of putting
back rich and attractive ecological landscapes and tackling environmental
damage to make them better places for wildlife and people alike.
SER 2000 will be the12th international conference of the Society for
Ecological Restoration (SER). The Society is American based, but is coming
to Europe for the first time to encourage a world wide dialogue of the
importance of taking positive action to repair and restore the world we live
in. Presentations will be made from destinations from as far field as the
Galapagos and China. A delegation from New York City Parks Department is
also visiting to share ideas, now Central Park for example, has become a
focus for ecological restoration.
Previous venues for SER have included New York, Chicago, Seattle and San
Francisco. So it is a real honour to host the event in Liverpool, at venues
including the Adelphi Hotel and St.Georgešso Hall. In celebration Liverpool
City Council is hosting a special Civic reception for the occasion, and is
launching a special year of environmental events and series of local.
Liverpool was an early pioneer in applied ecology, with the work of
Professor Tony Bradshaw, who is the Programme Chair for the Conference.
Part of the conference will focus on arts and creative solutions, in
relation to conservation practice. The important role of people and our
cultural patterns will be in evidence, including native American craft
demonstrations. Above all the aim is to influence decision makers with new
ideas, share best practice internationally and to make people realise they
can make positive changes to their environment. In Liverpool there is a
major opportunity to renovate our own Park landscapes using many of these
ideas.
It is also planned that the occasion be much more than an exchange of ideas,
A Merseyside celebration will take place midweek with the opening of
environmental charity Landlifešso National Wildflower Centre at Court Hey
Park in Knowsley on the outskirts to the City.
