International Year of Astronomy
-----------------------------
IYA is the commemoration of Galileo's use of the telescope to
explore the stars 400 years ago. A worldwide effort is underway to
promote astronomy to the public with increased visibility of existing
programs and running new ones. In the US, IYA participation for home
astronomers is thru the Night Sky Network of JPL and ASP.
To enhance visibility of IYA participants in NYSkies territory,
they are marked with an asterisk in the Index of Events. Please call
on them for astronomy advice, consultation, service. As new
affiliates
enter IYA, we'll flag them.
Jupiter's new collision mark
--------------------------
The collision scar on Jupiter, found on 19 July 2009, was
dilating
and fading during August. It may be gone from sight thru small sxopes
by September. I put in an ephemeris of meridian transits, just in
case, under Spetember 1st. Note that the longitude of the spot is now
closer to 216d (System II).

General news
----------
NYC Events readership continued upward during August as the
global
depression continues. Astronomers turn to NYC Events for low-cost or
free activities to continue their starry nourishment. In addition,
astronomers maintain that there is really only NYC Events to look
after the profession's public activities in the City region.
In the monthly calendar the Moon phase is for NYC time, not UT.
Readers asked if I could do the timezone shift. I use a planetarium
program that calcs celestial events in local time, so that was no
problem.
Science Club of LI still hasn't updated its website since June
2009. In previous years it ran session thruout the year. I leave it
in
the Index of Events for contact.
The marvelous exhibits at SIBL and GCT, 'The future beneath us',
are extended thru November 1st. Readers discovered this when they saw
during August the exhibits still in place with the July 5th expiry
date. Attendants explained the exhibits run thru October but they
left
the sign wording as is.
I got word from the National Space Society-LI chapter in August
that the group is now inactive. It, AKA Long Island Space Society,
remains in the Index for contact if spacefarers on the Island want to
help revive it.
The Hudson-Fulton anniversary movement is finally waking up.
There
were events up until now but poorly advertised and attended. One
which
I would want to go to was a visit by a replica of Henry Hudson's ship
docked at the Atlantic Salt Pier on August 29. Word just didn't get
out in time and, by news stories on the 30th, only about 150 people
showed up.
Part of the problem is that there are many 'Fulton Hudson'
websites all seemingly out of touch with each other and none being
actually helpful in promoting activities. A typical page gives the
name of an event with no date or location and no link to further
details! An other gives the location but makes you go to the
registration page to get the dates. all in all, I was very lucky, and
nothing but lucky, to capture two fascinating events for this NYC
Events.
Under August 1st is the New Amsterdam Trail tour and under the
16th is the 'Island at the center of the world' exhibit. Both are
must-do for the City astronomer. Specially since Hudson settled here
only a couple months before Galileo first inspected the stars with
his
telescope.
American Urban Star Fest returns to NYC Events after a few years
lapse. It was suspended from NYC Event when the Amateur Astronomers
Association was under hooligan's rule. With a new management and
assurances from newer senior members, the club squared up enough to
allow its events back into NYC events. The Fest is the premier
celebration of the darkening skies over the City. It is a beacon of
inspiration, the Statue of Liberty (holding a shielded torch, OK?),
for the darksky advocate who can truly say, 'In rest of world, it can
be won, 'coz in New York, it has been done!'.
Columbia University's lecture series is on the 18th & 25th. This
is a diversion from its normal every-two-week rule. Amateur Observers
Society also deviates from its rule-based schedule with its meeting
on
the 13th, the 2nd Sunday, not the 1st under the rule. The club
avoided
Labor Day weekend.
If your astronomy center deviates from its rule-based schedule,
please tell me! A wrong date in NYC Event, following your rule
without
a note of deviation will deviate your visitors. In fact, there is one
infallable way to make SURE your visitors know when yu run your
sessions.
Take a guess?
List the actual calendar dates and weekdays of the sessions for
the entire season or for the next several months. It genuinely is
really that simple. Try it!
Anthony Wayne starviewing in September has two sessions, on the
12th & 26th.
College of Staten Island suffered collateral electrical damage
during the summer. It postpones the start of its public starviewing
until October while repairs are in progress.
Event news
--------
NYSkies Astronomy Seminar on 2009 August 4 discussed 'Jupiter,
SL9, and now'. Several of us recalled the 1994 episode with Shoemaker-
Levy-9 and compared it with the current collision. We passed around
lots of diagrams, articles, charts.
The August 19th Seminar featured 'The planispheric astrolabe'
where we took home paper kits of a real astrolabe! The slideshow, by
NYSkier John Pazmino, stepped thru the construction of the kit and
how
it relates to antique metal astrolabes. The weather was overly torrid
that evening and one member gave up under the heat and leave early!
I'll have leftovers of the kit at the September 2nd meeting
Still all thru August there were no due and proper Apollo events!
There were a few half-hearted last-minute catch-up show. I learned of
them too late even for the yahoogroup and later learned that they
attracted pitifully small attention.
On the 14th the hayden Planetarium hosts a spacefaring talk
billed
as an Apollo-related event. Robert Zubrin, Mars Society pitches his
cheap quick way to send humans to Mars in, uh, ten years. Is this a
remembrance of Apollo?
I got many complaints, some while at AlCon, that the Apollo
flight
was so badly remembered and associated celebrations (such as there
were any) were so poorly promoted. Since I'm only an advocate and
dean
for home astronomy, not spacefaring, I can only vaguely imagine the
catfights raging among space enthusiasts!
The salt in the wounds of space outfits who missed Apollo is that
in this very summer there is a cardinal inquiry into the future of
human space travel by the Augustine committee. How can it take
seriously any argument for future human presence in outer space when
we didn't give sincere and significant honor to what could have been
the pioneering steps to extend humans thruout the solar system?
What I'm hearing now is that some space groups will try in 2010
to
commemorate Apollo 13. The rallying cry is 'Sending humans into space
is well worth the risk'. Yet some readers think I make up this crap.
Imagine Science FIlm Festival comes in mid October, A preview and
fund-raiser convenes on September 9th in DUMBO. See, I don't invent
this stuff.
The Astronomical League convention in August was an amazingly
wonderful event, in spite of depressed attendance. There were great
talks by great astronomers. Some in the audience even counted me
among
them with my talk 'How we went to the Moon a hundred years ago'.
Apart
from that, I renewed many friendships and exchanged tons of news and
plans and acquired some solid ideas for home astronomy around the
City.
We got two major conventions in September, the Connecticut Star
Party and the Custer Jamboree. Details on the 26th for the Jamboree
and the 18th for the starparty.
Summer Streets in August was an incredible winner event with
about
one million visitors in the pedestrian corridor on Manhattan! There
were other street walks elsewhere in the City in August, and many of
them continue thru September. See 'Weekend walks' under August 1st.
Please leave the Madoff benches in Central Park alone. I
appreciate that many readers really have it in for the fellow and
want
to vent their anger against the benches. So far, there seems to be
little physical damage but they are frequently messy from human and
pet toilet functions.
Sky news
------
Weather in August was mixed, with clear dry skies and
thunderstorms. We lost to clouds the occultations of Antares and the
Pleiades. On the other hand, the Perseids were observed in clearish
skies over most of NYSkies land, with haze and moonlight in the way.
The 2009 Hurricane season finally got under way when storm Ana
sprang up in mid August. She was followed by several others within a
couple days. Two, Bill and Danny, grazed the City region with heavy
rain and rough seas, but there was no reported heavy damages. The
worst was closing of beaches and lost business at waterfront
attractions.
The big bang of news came on July 19. Jupiter suffered a new huge
collision! The scar, a huge black spot near the south pole, was
plainly seen in small scopes thru July and into August! By late
August
the spot dilated and weakened. It is mostly out of view thru small
scopes by month end. Just in case, under August 1st I have a table of
transits of this spot for hours when Jupiter is up inn dark sky.
Saturn left us almost unnoticed! There was on August 12th the the
Sun's shift across the rings, making them invisible for lack of
illumination. At that time in the City it was cloudy and the planet
was in twilight.
