International Year of Astronomy
-----------------------------
IYA is the commemoration of Galileo's use of the telescope to
explore the stars 400 years ago. A worldwide effort is underway to
promote astronomy to the public with increased visibility of existing
programs and running new ones. In the US, IYA participation for home
astronomers is thru the Night Sky Network of JPL and ASP.
To enhance visibility of IYA participants in NYSkies territory,
they are marked with an asterisk in the Index of Events. Please call
on them for astronomy advice, consultation, service. As new
affiliates
enter IYA, we'll flag them.
Coney Island
----------
When the Astroland Park in Coney Island closed in fall 2008 the
erroneous belief sprang up: 'Coney Island closed'. Not so! That one
section is out of business, replaced temporary by Festival by the
Sea,
see June 1 entry. The rest of planet Earth's amusement mecca survives
and thrives with activity.
On Memorial Day weekend the beaches, other rides, restaurants,
shows threw open their doors for about 500,000 visitors! They poured
onto the 'island' (it's now attached to the rest of brooklyn) under
warm sunny breezy skies. I include, as just one extra example of
Coney
Island's vitality, the Mermaid Parade on June 20th.
World Science Festival
--------------------
The World Science Festival runs June 10-14 at various locations
around Manhattan. I tag WSF events in the list of
events.
WSF is held in New York because the City is the one place for
general public litteracy in science. Science awareness here is so
evolved beyond elsewhere that it is casually accepted as a source for
themes and ideas ad motifs by the arts. Some of the WSF events are
artistic works based on science!
NYSkies is part of WSF at its street fair on June 14th. Its booth
conducts the explanation and interpretation of the IYA 'From Earth to
the universe' exhibit. Come and visit us!

The City saw further examples of the ongoing depression during
May
2009. The American Museum of Natural History removed Natural History
magazine from its membership benefits. Last issue for existing
members
is July-August. Continuing the magazine now requires taking out a
separate subscription.
Pfizer medicine company on May 14th began offer of free medicine
for anyone losing his job in 2009. This applies to Pfizer products
already started under prescription before the layoff.
Domenici's clothing store, West Village MH, offers extra 20%
discount, above any posted discount, to Madoff victims. Present ID to
be checked against the official Madoff victim registry.
Since March 2009 I got far fewer whining complaints about
'scaring' clubs with my commentary. By now astronomers realize that
failure -- or refusal -- to deal with the severe depression lowers
their chances to survive. That's Darwinsim to the max, specially is
this 200th anniversary of his birth.
With the continuing tide of layoffs, furloughs, cancelled pay
raises, astronomers may now be out of action to carry out their
functions for their centers. Some centers report they are hurting
from
drasticly lower dues renewal for 2009. This cuts deeply into their
revenue and decimates their crew.
General news
----------
NYC Events continues to rise during 2009, a derivative of the
global depression. In addition there is the increasing realization
that there is really only NYC Events to look after the profession's
public activities in the City region. Astronomers, like most other
people nowadays, don't got the itchy quarter. They turn to NYC Events
for low-cost or free activities to continue their starry nourishment.
NYC Events is under strong pressure to include more events beyond
astronomy and space. I list a SELECTION of cultural activities but
NYC
Events targets the astronomy profession. One reason I'm begged for
more cultural events is that there seems to be NO OTHER consistent
calendar of these events in New York! I hear repeated complaints of
incompetent entries, missing essential facts, mistakes, ediurnation.
A rash of compalints came in mid May 2009 about the Hudson-Fulton
celebration. This comes around only once per century, yet there is
essentially no significant notices of actvities for it. There are
only
erratic incomplete partial sketchy news here and there. NYC Events,
without competent notices, has a general entry under June 1st.
Event news
--------
June 2009 continues a fascinating series of lectures on massive
tunnel projects around the City, coupled with two marvelous exhibits.
You have to visit 'The future beneath us' at both Sci Ind Biz Liby
and
Grand Central Terminal, as described under April 1st. The lectures
are
mostly at GCT thru June.
NYSkies Astronomy Seminar on 2009 May 6 looked at the current
state of cosmology based on a SciAm article about dark energy. It
also
discussed the upcoming Hubble repair flight and why certain
spacecraft
are placed n their specific orbits.
The May 20th Seminar continued the cosmolgy dialog, specially the
newly-launched Planck spacecraft. A show-&-tell item was the online
book about Planck that included good description of the bigbang
mcirowave radiation. It prepared for the Stonehenge sunset with ideas
for viewing sites around Manhattan.
The Explorers Club on May 2nd celebrated IYA with an all-day show
by an astronaut, space tourist, astronomer, science journalist, Mars
scientist. The $55 ticket included breakfast, lunch, and reception.
Several NYSkiers and spacefarers were among the 100 r so attendees
under sunny warm skies.
On May 22nd there was a strong talk about astrolabes! This was at
the Metropolitan Museum of Art, who set out three instruments from
its
collection to inspect. NYSkier John Pazmino had two of his astrolabes
to add to the exhibit and discussion.
There are some special astro events in June. Astronomical Society
of Greater Hartford has its StarConn (yes, two 'n's) on the 6th in
Middletwon CT. Amateur Observers Society runs its Starfest on the 19-
21 in Roxbury NY. on the 27-29 is the conference on the Sloan Digital
Sky Survey at Princeton University. This is a technical event but it
is free and can appeal to astroimagers and data-miners.
Please take a weekend day to hop to Philadelphia for its Galileo
and Renaissance science exhibit. It's only an hour away by Amtrak.

Sky news
------
Weather overall in May was terrible for skywatching. Most outdoor
stargazing sessions were called off for clouds. Never the less, we
got
our peeks at Saturn with his collapsing rings. There wre occasional
single clear nights to allow viewing of deep sky targets, but none so
clear to try for the omega Centarui challenge.
Saturn is in high southwest in evening, with his rings starting
to
flatten out. They were opened to their widest extent for 2009 during
May. Now they are closing up for good. Please, get all the views of
Saturn you can NOW. He dips lower in the west in July and sinks into
twilight by end of July
Now is the time also to watch the shadow of Titan cross the disc
of Saturn. Astronomy magazines and websites have timetables for these
events. It takes sharp optics and steady sky to notice the teeny
black
dot on the planet's globe.
May 1st opened the spring Milky Way season for New York City.
It's the summer section, not the winter part sliding away in
twilight,
that shines thru. You have to look in the owl hours when Deneb is
well
up in the northeast.
Weather is usually pretty unkind to the Milky Way, it being late
spring turning to summer. Yet June can bring remarkably clear dark
skies, good enough to let the Milky Way peek thru.
On May 29-31 we had the first window for seeing the Stonehenge
sunset. This is purely a geometric lineup of the sunset with
Manhattan's east-west streets with no astronomy value. NYC Events
issued a little before this window, so I'll report on it in the July
issue alog with a reminder about the second window of the year on
July
9-11.
On June 6 Antares is covered by the Moon in late night. In spite
of the almost completely full phase, Antares is bright wnough to see
as it glides into the Moon and when it pops out on the opposite side.
Please look at gamma Virginis! Its components are receding apart
enough to see in small scopes. Separation is about 1-1/2 arcsec. For
many of us with smaller instruments this year is the first recovery
of
gamma as a double star since its periastron passage a couple years
ago.
Owl hour observers are looking at Jupiter. He's losing his Great
Red Spot! The spot is weakening, as it does from decade to decade for
unknown reason. On May 27 he was in conjunction with Neptune. A far
better conjunction, the 2nd of a triple passing, is on July 10th in
late night hours.
