I'm guessing the (visual) back simply unscrews from the OTA bringing
with it the entirety of the primary, baffle tube and focuser, but a
few attempts to do so have not succeeded by hand, and before I put
an oil filter wrench to it I'm wondering if anyone has even opened
one of these up. There is what appears to be a thin rubber O-ring
between the "back" and the OTA (and it's obvious how the corrector
plate is removed (with a spanner wrench, though I have no intent of
so doing)), thus I'd appreciate any advice in this regards. I really
don't want to break it because it's actually fine optically after 2
hours of testing, but the inside OTA tube glare is unacceptable.
Thanks in advance!

You'll have to join the group to post there.
I have a Starmax and I'm a member of the Starmax yahoo group. You're
probably a member of that group too, but anyway, I seem to remember a
guy named Doug who flocked his Starmax last year some time, check the
archives of that group if you haven't already.
