Eclipse from Kanarraville, Utah

I figured that Kanarraville (pop. 355), just off Interstate 15 and a few
hundred meters north of the center line, would be an ideal
out-of-the-way place to see the eclipse. About 15,000 other people
thought so too. Old US Route 91 turned into a two-mile-long block
party, complete with cattle and horses.
The sky was clear, the mountains to the west didn't block anything, and
it all proceeded on schedule. :-) A bit of a breeze, and it felt a
little cooler, but what I'll remember most (besides the livestock) is
the weird shadows. That, and the 90-minute-long traffic jam after it
was over.

imagination, is the tangible connection with the countless previous
viewers. Spread over tens of thousands of years and right around the
globe. Today's blasé cynics have simply no grasp of the extraordinary
significance once attached to every single eclipse. The awe, mystery
and life-changing nature of such moments has always ploughed a deep
furrow in human consciousness. No doubt the prediction of these
important events had a major impact on mathematics. Perhaps best
embodied in the Antikythera mechanism and its use of primes in its
wheel count.
