Eclipse --- Driving from Ontario, Canada to New Mexico

Hi group,
Any opinions or advice on this? I see that Albequerque,
New Mexico will enjoy a "perfect" view of the eclipse next
weekend (including th weather forecast --- seems like it will
be clear)
Tentatively planning a 29-hour drive from my location to there,
I have these questions:
(1) Is it safe, generally speaking? Being on my own in a
completely unknown are is an intimidating prospect; anyone
familiar with the area could comment? For any non-highly
populated city in the States, I would assume by default that
it is safe (criminality-wise) and peaceful. But I'd like to
double check before.
(2) Do you think/estimate that the city will be completely
collapsed, with seas of people from all over the world
traveling and overflowing the area, making it very hard to
stand a chance to get to an area where the eclipse will be
visible?
Any other advice you may think of? Alternative locations
that might be equally easy or easier to drive to?

Safe enough. Carry a lot of water with you in case your car breaks down in

other words it is near the end of the path where the sun just sets at
annularity. You might want to consider Reno, NV or even Redding, CA where
it will be higher in the sky, unless your goal is to take photos of it next
to objects on the horizon.
An annular eclipse does not attract the kind of crowds a total one does.
Another bit of advice: are you sure that driving 29 hours will save you much
over flying especially counting motels, meals on the road, and lost hours of
your life that can never be recovered? You do not have time to make a
leisurely site-seeing trip. Rental cars are cheap in some of these small
cities.

Don't drive around the American southwest without lots of water (5
gallons wouldn't be too much.) Don't drive off on dirt roads (which are
everywhere) out of sight of the main highway.
Suggest for seeing the eclipse: go to Reno, NV. If thunderstorms
threaten go up on Donner Pass (35mi) and even a bit down the Sierra west
slope. Lassen Natl Park, CA would be best but harder to get to. Sun
angle is too low in New Mexico.

An eclipse like this is most photogenic if you catch it right on the

I'd aim for as far east as possible. Albuquerque is very good- you
could even go out towards Clovis.

come to me. Got to pick up an annular - saw a full from Mongolia a few
years ago, so this will complete the set.
