To Whom it may concern,

My friend and myself are looking for work on an archaeological site
anytime after June 15 (you got it, graduating seniors). We will both
have bachelors degrees in architecture and are genuinely interested in
doing anything involving on-site work outside the United States. I
should admit that we're both green on the subject of archaeology but we're
also willing to learn.

If anyone has any information or suggestions, please feel free to respond.

Thanx,

Joe

The Archaeological Institute of America publishes an annual guide
to digs associated with American institutions. The Biblical Archaeology
Review each January prints a list of dig opportunities in Israel. You
might also check with the Bible, Classics or Anthro. departments at nearby
universities.

Joe (and anyone else who may be interested),

Re: Working on sites

This may be of interest.

David Hill & Margaret Worthington (University of Manchester) and myself
(Museum of London) will be running a training dig/research excavation in
France at Pont-de-l'arche, Normandy this summer.

The excavation will take place in the first two weeks of July. People
will be able to come on the training dig for one week as a basic
introduction, or for two weeks with further tuition. I am not yet sure
of the fees for the training dig, as these are to be set by Manchester
University.

In addition, it will be possible for people who have some excavation
experience to come as volunteers. In these cases there will be no formal
tuition provided. However, this does not simply mean that they will be
used as trowel fodder!

The site is at Igoville, directly across the river from
Pont-de-l'Arche,and is a fortification built by Charles the Bald against
the Vikings. The fortification, together with the fortified town of
Pont-de-l'Arche, was intended to provide a strong control on the river
to prevent Viking incursions further up stream.

Last season's work produced evidence of a stone revetment for the
fortification, and evidence of one of the gates to the fort. This
year's work will further examine these features, and attempt to clarify
the dating.

There is a good campsite at Pont-de-l'Arche, and a list of accommodation
will be available with further details of the site.
