Whats good?

Hi, I'm Terry. I'm the new kid on the block. My interest is digital image enhancement. I take pictures of pictographs and petroglyphs (lots of them in Southern California) and use my IBM compatible to try to enhance the images. After laying outside for a few hundred, or a few thousand years, some of these images are looking pretty raggy. Image enhancement makes the better looking, and easier to study. I will be doing the same for astronomical, and other images, soon. I am also interested in tri-color work. Taking b&w photos, or CCD images, with red, green and blue filters, and combining them to form a color composite. I have a few questions for everyone: 1. Is there any good DOS or Windows programs that I should look at? I have used PhotoStyler, and other commercial products, and have test driven *many* shareware products. I'm asking if there is something on this network, or not well known, or brand new, that I should look at? Something not on Compuserve, or on the shelf at the local software store. 2. How about information? I am especially interested in filters, and other enhancement techniques. I am not a scientist, or a programmer (I can do a little), and my math skills limited to college algebra. So something highly technical would be beyond me. (But if it is really good, really useful, I will study and learn it!). 3. Any suggestions on books? I know the basics of computer graphics. I know hardware, I fix it. Any recommendations on books should follow the criteria listed above. 4. Lastly, how about information or books on seeing and perception. These books either have used great photography or should have...

Check out Photoshop on Mac or PC. Look into scanners for hard-copy to
digital xfers. Explore digital storage of pictures; 8mm, PLI, diskette, Photo-CD.

Please don't become one of those photographers who think they should
splash water on ancient images to photograph them more clearly. Wait until
a different time of day, use a flashlight, use infrared film, but don't splash
water on the things... Thanks,...
