There are minor differences in sudation among ethnic groups, but they
are overshadowed by individual variations. Although all ethnic groups
have roughly equal numbers of sweat glands (eccrine glands, the ones
that produce normal, odorless sweat), their distribution over the body
varies slightly. The amount of sweat they produce is subject to
enormous individual variation.

A larger group variation can be seen with respect to apocrine glands,
the ones that produce fatty substances that are the source of body
odor (especially after bacteria attack them). East Asians (Japanese,
Chinese, etc.) have far fewer apocrine glands than most other ethnic
groups, even though they have plenty of eccrine glands. Thus, East
Asians don't smell as much; although here again, individual variation
tends to overshadow group variations. The exact character of body
odor also varies from one group to another, and from one individual to
another. But overall perspiration is much more consistent.

Ironically, although East Asians have fewer apocrine glands, East
Asian societies tend to worry much more about body odor, sometimes to
the extent that some people will have apocrine glands surgically
removed in order to reduce body odor. Of course, taking a shower
works, too, but in a hot environment that may not be sufficient to
prevent any odor from developing.

Also, an individual's eccrine glands adapt to circumstances,
resulting in the possibility of a variation in sweat production over
time, should one move from one climate to another:
