I noticed the w3c is working on an HTML 5 micro data specification
(found here: http://dev.w3.org/html5/md/ ) Why did schema.org 'jump
the gun' and come out with there own specification? And what does
schema.org see as the future of both the HTML 5 spec and schema.org?

Schema.org uses microdata. The Microdata spec does not specify vocabulary.
We are simply using the specficiation that is part of html 5 at whatwg, which will soon be part of the w3c version of html 5.
