Hi all,

We don't currently have a speaker or agenda for the next Melb scala
meeting in late June.

If you would like to present on some topic please let me know.

Alternately, we haven't done a practical session for some time, ie BYO
laptop and investigate a tech/library of interest. Anyone want to
propose a topic and or lead on that?

Hi.

Just finished the 2nd run of Martin Oderski's FP Principles in Scala on Coursera.

During that, I found this  S-99: Ninety-Nine Scala Problems:  http://aperiodic.net/phil/scala/s-99/

Is there any interest in a coding session based on some of these problems?

Otherwise, messing with Slick (the DB framework Typesafe adopted for their stack, IIRC) would be useful!

Regards, John Kavadias.

Way back in the olden days, when bytes were transported in horse-drawn
wagons (er.. 2009) we spent a couple of meetings working on the 99
Scala problems. I don't think anyone got past about problem 25..? It
was a good experience and I enjoyed it.

Hi all,

There wasn't much response to my call for input on the June meeting,
other than John's suggestion of
http://aperiodic.net/phil/scala/s-99/

To be clear, I need some more initiative from the regular attendees in
planning & preparing for meetings. So if you want to come to a Scala
meeting in June, please contribute to planning an agenda.

Something that I would like would be a tools discussion.

Like what settings you use in Eclipse /  InteliJ, whether you use maven/ant/sbt/shell scripts/, what you like about your scala workflow and what you don't. I can imagine many people saying "I hate that you can't do XXXX" and find someone else saying "oh, it is easy... you just have to do YYYYY".

Now, I am not sure how to put it in a group without the risk of it being exceedingly dull. But a suggestion...

I am pretty much like to see the Macro introduced in Scala 2.10 as a experimental feature. But I am not sure whether you have had discussed it already..

I'm happy for a practical session, we haven't done that in a while.

Otherwise, I did some playing around with the new varieties of SBT a few months ago, and emerged with a higher level of understanding and respect for what they are doing with it.    There's a simple tool in there trying to get out!    I could put together some slides and examples on the core concepts and extension/plugin model.    It's quite fun once you get going.

Thanks for input all. So.. let's make June a practical session. I.e.
rather than listening to a speaker, bring your laptop and any Scala
questions that have been bugging you, plus any code or tips you want
to share.

If you want to try some of the 99 Scala problems with John, I think
that's a great way to learn which I benefitted from.

Myself, I'm keen to improve my SBT and IDE skills, so some tools focus
would be welcome.

I can offer some wifi via my iphone if people need it for maven, sbt etc.

I'll send out a formal notification in a week or so.

Hi Tony,

It'll be Monday June 24, approx 6-8pm. I could try hosting a skype
session (id: ben_hutchison), although it would be running over my
iphone..
