Hi Jakub,

No, I haven't got any answer about the post and unfortunately there is no meetups. I'm still hoping get some people willing learn Scala.

About the level, any level is welcome. I'm not a advanced experienced Scala developer either.

I'm studying by myself anyway, but if we have 3-4 people we could try to wake up this group.

What do you think?? Do you know someone else to join us?

Cheers,
Alex

    Hi Alex,

I was wondering if you get any answer for your post. Do you guys organize
    meetups?
If so, what proficiency level of participants do you expect? Is this group
/ meetup would suite for novices?

    Thanks,

Hi Alex,

I have just started learning Scala. I will talk to few colleagues. They may be interested in setting up a group and learn together.

Thanks,

Jakub

Hey Alex,

You can add me to that group, though I haven't been doing anything
with Scala recently and have forgotten everything I had learned!

Hi,

I recently started teaching myself scala, so would be interested in
joining a learning group to speed up the process.

Thanks,

Well lads,

I think we already have a good quorum.

We could try to do one Coding Dojo early next month and see how it
goes.

About the place, it could be done anywhere. A pub, not so busy, would
be great (it needs to have beers).

In the future, we could try to find company to "sponsor" a place. But
it shouldn't be a constraint to start.

What do you think??

Alex

Hi Alex,

I friend of mine expressed interest to join us. So, looks like there will be few of us.
Lets organize a meetup in March. What do you think?

Thanks,

Hi,

That's great news, I would love to come along and meet other people learning scala. We've being dipping our toes in work lately. I really like the concise code and frameworks like akka but find the api docs a little thin.

It's also good to see this group coming alive. Hopefully it will lead to an active user group in dublin.

March 13th is good for me.

Anyone have any good venue ideas?
I think the jtug group used to meet up in the library bar http://goo.gl/L9mBq
And the php user group use the bull & castle http://goo.gl/wz8be

How noisy they get, depends on your luck. But maybe that does matter
so much for the first meetup.

Hi All, I can (maybe) help with a venue and some coffee/beer. What do you want
to do? An evening of meeting, talking, hacking? Or maybe a full day on
Scala (Beginners/Learners Hackathon)? How many people do we talk about?

If it is in the evening 20th-23rd would work. If you want to do the Hack-Day
Saturday the 31st works.

Let me know.

Roland

Hi guys,
I'll throw my name in for a meet too! Love to hook up if there is more
of an appetite for Scala in Dublin now.

Have attended a few of the (un)confs in UK over the last year or so
(Scala Liftoff etc.)... would be great to see some sort of community
building this side of the water.

As an aside, are any of you interested in Clojure? I've been playing
more with this than Scala of late (for reasons that could be better
debated over alcohol :-D ). Perhaps the group might be interested in a
functional programming theme than a pure Scala?... anyway just
throwing that out there..

@Roland: The offer of a location/refreshments is very generous and I'd
be up for this on a week night if it suits.

cheers

Hi lads,

Nice see more and more people interested.

About Cloujure: I'm really interested in cloujure , as well as
Haskell. But this is a start. May be in the future we would create a
Functional Programming group, rather than just Scala Group.

About the venue: I guy posted in the the Meetup.com offering a vanue
as well. Here is the comment:
"Hi Alexandre, we can let the DSUG use Tcube in Castle Street,
Dublin2, for your meetups - seats 50, wi-fi, video, projector, beer,
pizza etc etc Ping me if you'd like to pop by to take a look, or visit
http://irishdev.com/Search.html?q=tcube"

What do you think??

About date: I would prefer 13th or 14th, just because I'm anxious.
20th-23rd is fine for me as well.

Also, my suggestion is make it as simple as possible. Beer, One laptop
for each 5 people, Beer.

Cheers,
Alex

+1

What is the preferred location? Pub or (Gilt) Office or …?
When do we start?

What do we want to do? Just work on projects? Right now,
I am in need of a crawler to go over the Gilt Website and
make sure that all links resolve (within 300 msec). The
crawler must be able to handle cookies and http/https.

Will people bring there own hardware? Lets make
sure the dev env is already up and running and
working (hello world).

Anything else in terms of homework that we need to do
before we get together?

Ok, Tue 20th it is !

I think we would get more work done in the Gilt office, Is there anyone strongly against this?
We could retire to the pub after, if people have time :)

Does everyone have there own laptop with scala env ?
I do, and I'm willing to pair if were short.

Roland, the web crawler project sounds like something to start on, alright.
I guess we can discuss that, and how people would like to learn when we meet.

What's the earliest that people can make it to town ?  Does 6:30 sound reasonable ?

Great!!!

I'll bring my laptop with environment set..

I would suggest start with a Coding Dojo. It's a nice collaborative way to learn.

Here there is some suggestions of "katas" : http://codingdojo.org/cgi-bin/wiki.pl?KataCatalogue

Hi all,
yep, 20th good for me.

Been a while since I opened Scala env but sure I dust it off on my laptop..

Not sure what numbers like now but certainly best to pair up as will be varying degrees of familiarity to start and also allow people to interact.

I can aim for a 6:30 start and I agree that if the Gilt offer still there then it would be best option.

Hey guys,
another great tool for using as a challenge when starting a new language is: http://projecteuler.net/

There are many solutions out there in different langs already but they offer some good exercises that get more and more complex as you go.

Hi All,

great get together. Great fun!!! As discussed, lets do this again. Maybe towards end of May.

Hi Alan,

I made it work!!! I was directing you into the wrong direction. Stop using sbt 0.7.7.

Just uninstall sbt and use macports to install sbt 0.11.0 and then use a/the build.sbt
file to include the lib dependency. I am about to commit/push an example to the git repo
(in roland).

Roland
