Hello folks,
hello Scala Enthusiasts, my name is Leith.

i am an engineer at Coursera, a platform for free online education from top universities.
in a few weeks we are offering a free online Scala course (https://www.coursera.org/course/progfun), taught by Martin Odersky himself!

A couple of our engineers are going to be taking the class (dogfooding!) and we thought it’d be fun to open up our office for a weekly study group. In the study groups, we could watch the week’s videos, discuss them, and start work on any assignments. We would also provide dinner and good company.

Would anyone be able to advertise it to your members on Meetup or other local gatherings?
If you have any members that have been meaning to learn Scala, this would be a great excuse for them to learn alongside others. Also, if you know of a group/company that would like to join us in sponsoring the event, please let me know. We are happy to spread awareness of other places around the area that use Scala (we ourselves use the play framework for a few of our tools and are looking to expand this even more)

The course starts September 18, and we are looking to bring together 20 or so people each week, like on a Tues or Wednesday. Of course, anyone can take the course online and form their own study groups.

If you can advertise this to other Scala groups around the bay area, please let me know how i can help. If you would like to attend one of our study groups (or all of them), just email me at eleith at coursera.org so i can confirm we have room for everyone and get an idea of what day of the week works best. If you want to form your own study group or can advertise this to other groups outside of the bay area, then look for us in the online class!

Leith,

Perhaps you missed our meta-event announcement? I suggest Coursera edit the meta-announcement page and add your address and time for your study group at the bottom.
