I was wondering if anybody in this group is working on a DIY book scanner.

http://www.diybookscanner.org/

Since I have very severe eyesight problems, this is something I have been toying with doing.  Just wanted to know if there was somebody here that was already working on such a thing.

Jim,

My dad built one, it's actually pretty simple. He took some cheap broken ikea-like furniture boards and put it together with a drawer rail, a 2x4, a lamp, and some bungie cords.

I'll bring it in to the open time on Saturday.

asked on Twitter: anyone know of a good, cheap, available camera (w remote control shutter?) for building a DIY book scanner?

Nick - noticed you replied to the above question.   Did he use a camera similar to your recommendation below?
the CHDK compatible cameras are not the latest model, probably easier to find used.

I bought a couple of used chdk cameras for a stereoscopic project i wanted to try ages ago. One of them died pretty quickly, but i think i still have the other if you want me to donate it to the space next week. Swiss had one also. Saw it on the bench last week- held together with black tape.

Bob,

I have a Canon A590 I bought just as it was beginning to get CHDK support.

My dad's book scanner cameras are Canon Powershot A480.

I should be at the meeting tomorrow.  I will probably be there from around noon to 2.  If you can bring the book scanner, I would love to see it.  Photos are ok as well.
