Subject: DML5 Summer Youth Programming Competition - Vote for Santa Barbara's Code-a-thon Event!
This summer, the MacArthur Foundation’s 5th annual Digital Media and Learning Competition (DML5) returns as the “Project Connect: Summer Youth Programming Competition,” with a multitude of non-profit organizations vying for up to $10,000 each in grant money to spend on summer youth programming that will “encourage the development of apps, badges, curricula, and other tools to enhance learning through making the online experience for young people more civil, safe, and empowering.”
To this end, the Santa Barbara Public Library (in partnership with SB Makerspace) has entered the competition with our proposal for a 48-hour “coding/social-media lab-a-thon,” hosted by the Central Library in an attempt to encourage kids to have fun and create software, apps, photos, videos and more to be shared on the internet and social media in an effort to spread awareness of the central tenets of the competition. I would appreciate if all of you could take the time to vote for our proposal (along with any other proposals you find enjoyable), and spread the word amongst family and friends to do the same; voting ends June 15th, so your vote really does make a difference. The opportunity to host an event like this that encourages creative/disruptive thinking in teens and adults and awards cash prizes to the winners is something that could end up leading to some really compelling projects…
Plus, who wouldn’t want to see how unhinged I might [will] become after spending two nights sleeping in the library? That alone should be enough to get a few votes from everyone here!
