I don't know to what extent this should play a role in the selection
process, but timezone and a description of the ideal mentoring style
would definitely help match mentors to students.
In the proposal section, I would add that (especially if they've taken
inspiration from our list) the proposal should demonstrate how well they
understand the task, e.g. with well a articulated final goal or with
detailed descriptions of intermediate deliverables. Hopefully, we can
ask for that without writing "in your own words." ;)
