to SB Eat Local Challenge
I have been pretty good about the eat local challenge. Yes, I need my
middle eastern Chai or African rooibos tea in the morning, but Santa
Barbara wine at night is just fine! For dinner, I find that the beans
and squash at Shepherds Farms make great staples like soups, chilli,
dips, etc. And my baking bug is appeased using the wheat flour from
the Apple Farm people.
Convincing my my teen age son to convert 100% has been a different
story. At 13, he controls his world and hence his menu...right? Well,
unless my son reads this post, which is highly unlikely, I think I
have one upped him this time. Here's how. He and his friends like to
ride their bikes to Carls Juniors in Carpinteria and using coupons
that they have cut and saved from the Sunday paper, they devise a plan
to get as much from the myriad of coupons and then they feast on all
of that non local rubbish.
My scheme... to switch the coffee he's drinking to Folgers. I have
negotiated to take Jack out to lunch (at the Burger Bus serving local
grass fed beef) once every other week. The only hitch, he stops
eating the commercial stuff. If I smell one whiff of sad or mad cow
on his breath, the deal is over.
I have to say that although it's costing me more, he has stuck to the
deal and loves the fare from the bus. Unfortunately, the peer pressure
is wearing on him. To hear his friends try to influence him back is
heart breaking. "Jack, look, a coupon for a two for one chilli bacon,
avocado burger".
Try it with your teens. I dare you!!
See you at the Bus,
Trish
