Subject: summer science camps

My 14 year old brother wants to get his feet wet trying out potential career
options.  I want him to come here during the summer and try going to a camp
to try things out.  Does anybody here know of some
programming/engineering/science/other camps in the area (preferably on the
eastside)?

Hello Jon,
the pacific science center has loads of camps in the summer. Thing is, we've been somewhat disappointed in the quality and they might have filled up already, but check it out anyway.

In factoria mall is kidsquest, and as skeptical of its quality as I originally was, it's turned out to be a VERY educational place for my 10 y.o. They have geology, engineering, etc camps. I would definitely recommend that place.

In belleview there's a place called Mad Science. No experience with it. Looks awfully commercial (ergo watered down) to me, but maybe i'm wrong.

Thanks for the suggestions.  They look like some pretty good camps,
commercialized or not.  Sadly, it looks like my brother will be too old for
those camps.  Maybe I'll resort to giving him some projects myself and make
him self-learn. =)

There's also all kinds of other events.. Amateur Radio Field Day is in June
which lasts a weekend (free), hackerspaces doing their projects or hanging
out at the MCS.  Probably tho self-study is your better option unless he's
ready to take a summer class or two at a community college.

Certainly there are tours with local companies you can tie to the
self-study:

Tours will help give him an idea of what the job is about day to day...
